Noob guitar pedal question

Hey all,

I have started my foray into guitar effects pedals and so far have bought an OCD overdrive pedal by Fulltone and a BBE Green Screamer.

I've had the OCD for about a year, it is supposed to be a more transparent overdrive pedal which a lot of people apparently use for a clean boost.

The Green Screamer is a TS 808 clone which is fuzzier and more crunchy then the OCD to me.

If I am going to run them together, should I use the OCD into the Screamer or vice versa?

An alternate question, I paid about $140 for the OCD pedal a year ago and could sell it for around $100 on craigslist. Should I keep both or get rid of the OCD and use that $$$ to buy other pedals?

Try it both ways. There is no right or wrong order for effects - they will likely react a bit different depending on how you do it.

As for dirt pedals, it is a slippery slope. I just picked up a The Elements and love it.

I just wasn't sure if there was a conventional wisdom about "boosting" an overdrive or overdriving a "boost". Guess I should know there IS no conventional wisdom in rock!!

I'm going to slowly build my board over the next year or so, next purchase is the tuner for the board, then probably a delay. I like the reverb in my amp so probably won't get that.

I like to put a compressor behind my Boss MT2. It is nothing drastic but gives it a little different grind. (and out of phase pickups play well with that combo)

micro pogs are damn fun. Are you using the EB as a vol pedal? I've got one that I sometimes use as an expression pedal for the Xero env filter.

Yes. Technically I don't need it but I'm just used I having a VP in that location on the pedalboards I use every day.

I would love to get a looper but they are pretty pricey! I can't justify it until I get better...

Right now I just download backing tracks and play over those.

You can get a used RC-2 for about $100. It has drum tracks built in. You'll get better faster imho than playing over backing tracks. You create your own backing tracks.

A metronome and/or drum machine is your best friend or your worst enemy. Play with a metronome and you'll be amazed at how much drift your tempo has relative to playing over backing tracks.

you can experiment either way, trying them stacked together, to see what you like best. I would keep the OCD for now. I took the Greenscreamer off my board a year ago...it just sounds too lifeless and dull. I replaced it with a Rockett Flex-Drive which is much better sounding and much more tweakable

as for loop pedal..i wouldnt wait until you are better. ive said it a zillion times, they make you better in a hurry if you use it. buy a used Boss RC-20XL. Mine has developed a bit of a hum, but has going strong for a long time now and I love it

today's setup -one without paint is a micro pog. seems we all like them :-)

That fella Rooster who makes the Trailer Trash boards lives here in Denver. He's actually a fine guitar player himself. I had a Trailer Trash board for a few years but it sorta fell apart after the first 250 shows.

I change up my board to often too have one built. I have a PT Jr, Mini, and Nano. I'm selling the Nano, and likely will build the Mini back up with the "serious" pedals (tuner, comp, looper), which gives me a bit more room on the "crazy" Jr board (pictured above). I'm not sure I like dragging two boards around though - I did that for awhile with the Mini and Nano. I looked at the PT-2 but it was just too big, especially for some of the stages I end up playing.

Easy to lose yourself in the boutique effects world...

if you plan to keep the OCD and the BBE, I would put the OCD before the BBE. try either way, but im confident youll find driving the BBE with the OCD will be best

boost before overdrive is usually the way to go...if you have multiple OD or distortion pedals, i tend to like the brighter one before the darker one...example..i always like my Rat before a Big Muff, or MXR dist+ before the Big Muff. This is only relevant if you are stacking them....playing them at the same time...

when you get the delay, put that last....there is "some" conventional wisdom when it comes to pedal placement.

Actually, I -did- take a picture of my travel 'everyday' pedalboard on Sunday. It was a very long day and a very interesting show.



On this board the Boss Blues Driver is LAST, it goes volume-wah-808/909-delay-bluesdriver.

I only use the blues driver as an overall 'master', occasionally I get a high-power amp like a Twin or Blues Deville, and I don't want it that clean, and I'll turn on the blues driver to give -everything- that kind of mush that a lower-power amp would.

On ideal days where I get a deluxe or HotRod deluxe or something nice I turn the blues driver off, and just have one OD stage with the 808/909 pedal, and turn the amp up to 4 or something.

To me 808/909 pedals reduce the low end when you kick them in, and there's other pedals (like a Blues Driver, on the cheap end) that maintain that full-range kind of sound.

If your OCD seems to maintain a more 'full-range' kind of sound, then I would suggest you put it after the 808/909 and use the 808/909 to take things 'over the top'.

Rick, correct answer is what ever sounds good to you. Be warned this is a slippery slope.....

Ive got a box of OD pedals- my long time fave "tube screamer" is an MI Audio Blues Pro. Better than my (now stolen) genuine, one owner 1981 TS9. I use this in conjuction with an MI clean booster and buffer, and the booster is usually placed after the OD. Sometime boosters and ODs can interfere with things like delays and chorus when placed ahead. You have to experiment.

All these years I was convinced that I had no talent and my playing didn't sound good, it never dawned on me that all I need is a whole bunch of pedals!
