Any other actuaries on here?
For those who aren't FSA = Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. 6 years of studying every weekend, every night, I never failed an exam. The Celtics were at the 4 seasons right next to us, Meg Ryan was there and Steven King, too! Plenty of drinking, man those Canadian girls are sexy! as was the girl from Belgrade. Growl! Sorry to probably bore everyone on here, but you guys are my friends and I just had to blab about it.

EXCELLENT!
Actuaries are strong in my wife's family. Her brother and two uncles are actuaries. I consider the FSA the equivalent of a PhD. Good work! Larry |

I got a job in 2006 with 1 exam passed (the Probability & Calculus exam) that I passed on my own while working @ UPS (aka , Hell). Most people have about 3 exams now when they get their first gig due to more competition among candidates. I've been in the field for about 6 years. What I love about it is that you don't need to spend thousands of dollars on some degree. You just study and pay a couple hundred to take the test. That's it. The society has volunteers that make and grade the tests. I plan on volunteering in a few years to continue to make the exams tough.

From the people at the fellowship admissions course, I'd say:
1/3 from China 1/2 from Canada 1/8 from US 1/24 from elsewhere Just shows what countries value studying. Of course population size will play some effect

And I'm not saying China as in they were of Chinese decent...I'm talking they live in China.

Now that's funny, Island.
For those of you who don't know about the battery of tests required for "Fellow" status, I'd probably regard them as perhaps the hardest tests in the world. Seriously. Many would agree. Six years is, I believe the quickest time in which that can be accomplished. The first one....the easy one......is Calculus and Probability. Just sayin'. A most serious and sincere congratulations to you, szyzygy, Sir! According to my understanding, if your math geekiness is combined with the ability to sit at a table and have a pleasant and warm conversation with clients, your salary in ten years will be obscene by any standard.

I am not one of the geeky actuaries. A couple of fellow pelicans on here know me IRL and can vouch for my non-geekiness. I was always better at verbal stuff than math. My next goal is to start my own company. Where I am now is ok, but there is a little too much butt-kissing required that I just can't bring myself to do. So I'll go into consulting. I hope my salary will be obscene- I remember one of the dudes on an exam prep DVD telling us about how we'll all be driving Ferraris someday. I'll take a Porsche instead, though!

Congratulations. I had no idea there was such a thing as a Society of Actuaries. Sounds like an awfully arduous course of study.

IF you are not a geek and you are an actuary, Superman is correct. You will do very well!
