classic car insurance

Good Day,

This is getting frustrating. Any recommendations? Looking to drive the car no more then twice a week, 6000 annual. Limitations around errands - seems to be the legal jibber ....

Anyone happy with their classic car coverage?

Appreciate any thoughts....Dave

My buddy has Hagerty and is very pleased with the price and lack of restrictions. Apparently they realize you might have to drive your car on a weekday to something other than a car show. No experience with claims.

Oooh, good thread. I'll probably be getting my Mustang about the end of April, this will suddenly become very relevant.

Are there any that don't require garage storage? My Bronco sits outside and I'm sure I could save money on an agreed value policy.

Does Hagerty care if you have "classic" tags? I just did the Hagerty on-line walk through. Not sure of the first party medical options. I am calling them later today. Looks like a few hundred bucks cheaper then Qeico - who has me as a daily driver.

I have a few cars, including the SC with Grundy for over a decade. I've had a couple of claims over the years and they have gone well.

Did you discuss the value with Geico? I have Geico for all of our vehicles (very happy BTW), but once had an agent tell me that they essentially depreciate cars down to a minimal value with time. There's little recognition for retained or collectible value with older cars, in this case the agent was advising me to not get full-coverage because they attached very little value to the car.

Until now I was extolling the virtues of Hagerty, but without proof, just hearsay that they would do me right if and when I needed them...

Well the time came... my 72 911 was in the shop for 7 months getting all rebuilt mechanicals, and the day it came out of the shop for its maiden test drive, it was rear ended with the mechanic at the wheel. Initially hagerty came up with an insultingly low number for a rear lid, some unbending, paint... I called and politely asked WTF was going on (that was the hardest part, getting to talk to your rep, apparently they are busy)... they said it was just a preliminary... Eventually, they came back with a $# that was 5 times higher than the prelim, and even covered a *full* respray of the car because paint matching was going to be very difficult.... No arguments, the shop asked for $xxx, the adjuster said it was fair, hagerty sent a check, not for a penny less...

I'm impressed... I'll be even more impressed if they don't drop me next year... But respect to Hagerty ! They came through !

I used Hagerty for my SC, and I had to make a claim after a construction sign fell on it. They were excellent.

I've had Hagerty for 2 years with my 911 and am happy (no claims however)

I signed with them before I registered my car but they never asked if I was getting historic tags (doubt they care)

also never saw anything stating my car had to be garaged

hagerty for 7yrs, but when my policy is up in january, i'm going to look into chub.

no problems with hagerty with the few small claims i have had so far, just heard chub might be quite a bit cheaper. so will look into this more next winter.

yes you need a 2nd newer car for a DD and you should be garaged. not all states have collector plates and some people like to pay to keep originals or vanity plates, so plate isnt an issue.

I'm using AAA. No (collector car) claim experience, though. But they were good the one time we filed a claim on a daily driver.

USAA occasionally sends me letters noting I am eligible. I drive my 75 911S Targa daily and have put lots into it since paying $4500 from my Mother in Law 10 years ago.

The kind notices read like this :
Quote:
According to our records, you have at least one older vehicle (+25 years) that may qualify for
collector vehicle insurance, provided it:
• Is driven on a limited basis (e.g., pleasure drives, club functions, exhibitions, tours, etc.)
• Is kept in a locked garage (or similar enclosure)
• Has collector value (related to age, condition, rarity, options, etc.)
We appreciate your business and want you to know that this type of specialty insurance product is
available through the USAA General Agency. We have partnered with American Collectors
Insurance to provide this specialty insurance at affordable rates.
Most collector cars are used only for pleasure driving and occasional hobby use. The usage is
typically gentler and less frequent than regular car use. In addition to having a low annual mileage,
collector cars are usually stored in a secure location and very carefully maintained. This allows
American Collectors Insurance to give collector car policyholders low deductibles - or in some cases
no deductibles - and rates that are usually much lower than regular car insurance rates.
Additionally, regular car insurance doesn't take into account how collector cars tend to appreciate
in value. Collector car insurance covers your vehicle for an agreed amount. In the event of a total
loss, you are paid the full insured value of your vehicle without depreciation. Regular car insurance
typically pays a claim based on the market value of your vehicle which includes depreciation.
Some benefits of a specialty policy include:
• Agreed Value Coverage - guarantees the full insured value of the collector vehicle in the
event of a total loss, less any applicable deductible
• Flexible Usage Options - allows you to drive the collector vehicle up to the limit of the
mileage tier you select (2,500, 5,000 or 7,500 miles available in most states)
• Expert Customer & Claim Service - ensures your needs will be handled by collector-vehicle
insurance specialists with over 30 years experience
If you prefer to receive a quote online, please log on to usaa.com (Keyword: Collector Car). To
discuss all the collector vehicles in your household please contact a designated American Collectors representative today at 1-877-303-6071.
I haven't bitten despite the risk of a low value on my car if it were to be totaled. My faith in USAA is strong enough that my documentation (receipts, photos, Pelican posts) would support more value. But I know I am paying less ($46/6mo with $1000 deductible vs $260/6 mo with $500 deductible for other cars) for collision only because of what they could do to me. This thread is timely. Am I fooling myself? The letter implies my regular use of the car makes it not eligible (although I do only put 5000 mi/yr on it )- but agreed value would be nice. Maybe I should call since I have assumed it would be more expensive, but might not be.
