I have not got any skunks this year, but other springs I have had to dispatch several. Thus far the dog has only been sprayed bad once a couple years ago. Our house has been sprayed several times probably due to our dog or cats scaring the skunk while it was up near the house stealing our cat food.

Hard to believe anyone here has a problem with dispatching nuisance skunks.

A skunk in the day time is bad. Next time relocate it somewhere where it can give the city dwellers rabies.

Rick Lee 04-02-2012 06:05 PM

Actually, I have glue traps all over the house and have caught maybe two crickets since last year. Before it got cold, I had hundreds in the glue traps. But this is the first time I've had scorps around the house. I'll be treating the place soon.

ODDJOB UNO 04-02-2012 06:13 PM

scorpions also like moist areas. limit watering for awhile hit it with DE from pool store and it works great. scorpion bites suck royal donkey dongs. man they hurt man they sting and man you will think ya stuck your self with a white hot poker.

ouch big time. empty shoes boots every day and dont walk outside barefoot with out flash light.

crap every year the weather warms up abit, and there goes the neighborhood with scorpions black widders(widows) and rattlesnakes, walapai tigers, centipedes, etc.

Skunks eat crickets....

Poor little kitty cats, all unloved and misunderstood.

Time for bed....

futuresoptions 04-02-2012 08:06 PM

I think that I have one skunk that lives in my backyard... Bastage waits till about 10:30pm and then must spray all under the house. If I ever catch him I will dissect him with a hammer...

ROTFLMAO!

I do live in the country. We have skunks living under the bedding shed at the barn. They don't bother the horses, the dogs ignore them (although our blind dog has stumbled over one, with stinking results).
They do hunt for food in the daytime.

Now coyotes, that's another story. Not welcome around here at all. I know they are here, but they receive a firm reminder of their status whenever one shows its nose, so they tend to stay out of sight.

I live in a rural setting too and couldn't fathom killing an animal like that. Just cruel, stupid and unnecessary. Skunks won't bother you if you leave them alone and just let 'em do their rummaging and go on their merry way.

I have no problem with animals on the property, none. I've had deer, a fox or two, some hawks, squirrels, etc. If they come in the house, it's a different story but if they're just running around the yard digging for grubs I could care less. It's only grass and most of it is being ripped out soon and replaced with stonescaping and/or hardscaping soon anyway. If I gave a crap about a lush green lawn I'd hire a golf course turf manager.

Bugs (particularly the biting/stinging kind) are killed on sight. Spiders outside I don't care about. Spiders inside the house get relocated outdoors.

I don't understand how some people can seemingly wack off to the thought of blowing some innocent animal's brains out for doing nothing other than living its life (especially if not destroying anything of value). Just dumb, boorish and stupid.

Jeff, I take no thrill in knocking off a skunk, but they are a very prolific carrier of rabies, and when they get up near the house, they are paid for. I'm sorry but I'm not risking one of my two mutts getting that.

Les, don't you get tired of all your stuff smelling? And I wouldn't let that happen, when one of your dogs gets rabies, don't complain about it. No way in hell would I let skunks live under any of my buildings. Not a smart idea....

Sid,

There doesn't seem to be rabies in the skunk or fox population in Nova Scotia. However, the dogs and horses have had their shots.
The only smell I deal with at the barn is horse $h!t.
For several years momma skunk has raised 4-5 little ones there with (aside from Colby, who doesn't see) no problems. We do get a smell when they get killed on the road, despite the driveway being 1/4 mile long.

I must admit it is inconvenient some evenings, coming home and finding a skunk or two foraging in the grass alongside the driveway, but I am semi-retired and not in that much of a hurry.

The biggest entry into a crawl space should be no more than 1/4". It's a bad idea to have critters under your house.

Critters are target practice. Specially skunks and coyotes. And porcupines.

Actually Sid, most rabies is found in Raccoons. I have stomped around outdoors my whole working career and have never seen any type of rabid animal. That being said I do not mess with wild animals. Skunks also eat rats and mice so I don't mind them around. But, then again, my house or dog has never been sprayed either. It boils down to "do what you gotta' do".

Jim Bremner 04-03-2012 12:26 PM

For de-skunkung a dog or other items that got sprayed there's a wash available at pet stores that uses enzymes to kill the stank.

OP, does that thing kick like a mule? it's got no mass...

So bugs are a different "class" of animal, not worth your time? I'm reporting you to the local peta chapter, and we'll be protesting outside your house forthwith.

Right after I finish this delicious beefsteak, which I bought at the supermarket, so nothing had to die...
