Surprise while testing new spoon
I went out back to test my new .380 and found a surprise target. The Ruger performed much better than he did.

are you going to eat it or was it just for fun/waste?
|
Nice pic of some grass. I guess you're a big man now because you shot a skunk. What was he doing to deserve this death by hot lead?
|
He was up around the house where my family and dog hang out. If it's a skunk, woodchuck, or fox, they can't come around the house. Any place else, I let them be. That's going on the advice from the DEC.
|
I shoot all of them, they dig up the yard like bulldozers! I don't poison the watershed with grub killer, so I have more than my fair share of them, but last year the skunks were just destroying my yard, but not anymore, after shooting 6 of them last season, I have not seen one yet this year.
|
How dare you!!! You should have invited them in for coffee!

You guys that are crying foul are probably city dwellers. When you live in the country you look at things a little differently. You have to protect yourself, and the usual predators that cause the most damage are the smaller ones. This is a pic from my home office window. This occurs just about every day. They don't bother anything. It's the little ones that create a problem. As much as I don't like it, they can't be around the house.

What a cute little gun. For the wife?
|
Do skunks release their spray when they get shot? I bet that was fun cleaning up...
I hate to see anything die, but I understand you sometimes have to do what you have to do if it involves family safety... |
If the critter is really that scary I guess you have to kill it but to post it like you did something noble shows a sad side of gun ownership.
|
i would have invited them in, gave them the new issue of "tree hugger" magazine, a carmel makey o-tee latte....................THEN SHOT 'EM IN THE HEAD!
yeah city slickers ARE TOTAL MORONS! skunks are only cute on TV, live with them. can you say bubonic plague? can you say rabies? and for the even smaller lil rodentins(rodents)............. can you say hanta virus????? im so damn cheap with bullets now a days, i just run over rattlesnakes or shoot 'em in the head with my pellet pistol or rifle! yeah ya gotta be good for this! practice does make perfect or yer a dead man! trust me! yesterday was my 1st one of the year KILLT DEADER THAN POO! died from biting my truck tire! think yer good??????????????????? try head shots on 3-4ft diamondbacks. of course we are legal.........we have our huntin licenses' thats all ya need to be legal beagle. crap have ya ever had to DE SKUNK a DAWG in TOMATO(toe-ma-toe) JUICE! what an absolute GIANT MOFO PITA X 1 MILL-YON that is. good work that lil .380 ruger is a nice shooter. and rugers factory is in prisskit,az.(prescott). we like rugers. |
A year after a skunk spray I'm still "activating" our dog when he gets wet or with a bath. Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda with a bit of Dawn is the internet recipe - helped, but not perfect. Never found the varmit - but plugged the fence hole it used. These creatures could use thinning out. Lots on the local roads this year. Sorry for not spacing that all out! :)

I didn't post this to puff up my chest about having to put down a nuisance animal. I posted to brag about my new spoon. I'm sorry if the post offends anyone that doesn't live in this environment. Again, when you live out in the country, you have to protect yourself when necessary. You can not allow these wild animals to roam in the proximity of humans or domesticated animals, period. Bad things happen quickly if you do. |

FWIW I left the skunks alone. Kept people from prowling around the property at night and warned me when they were doing it! Skunks learned my voice and completely ignored me. One used to beg to be petted! Sweet little thing!
|
I killed three scorpions the other night, one in the bathroom, two in the backyard. I didn't even think about relocating them. I'll kill every one of the I find and I go looking for them.
|
I have not got any skunks this year, but other springs I have had to dispatch several. Thus far the dog has only been sprayed bad once a couple years ago. Our house has been sprayed several times probably due to our dog or cats scaring the skunk while it was up near the house stealing our cat food.
Hard to believe anyone here has a problem with dispatching nuisance skunks. |

A skunk in the day time is bad. Next time relocate it somewhere where it can give the city dwellers rabies.

rickster.............the reason why you have scorpions IS?????? because ya gots CRICKETS! scorpions love crickeet buffets. spread diatamaceous earth ALL THE FEEK AROUND PERIMETER OF STRUCTURE! about maybe a 1" pile by 5" wide. trust me yer scorpion crap will be gone very quickly. a whale able at any pool store and cheap. try not to let it get wet if possible like tonight would be good as we wont have any rain until next year! LOL! |
Actually, I have glue traps all over the house and have caught maybe two crickets since last year. Before it got cold, I had hundreds in the glue traps. But this is the first time I've had scorps around the house. I'll be treating the place soon.
|
scorpions also like moist areas. limit watering for awhile hit it with DE from pool store and it works great. scorpion bites suck royal donkey dongs. man they hurt man they sting and man you will think ya stuck your self with a white hot poker.
ouch big time. empty shoes boots every day and dont walk outside barefoot with out flash light. crap every year the weather warms up abit, and there goes the neighborhood with scorpions black widders(widows) and rattlesnakes, walapai tigers, centipedes, etc. this 3 footer the other day actually thought he could BITE and POISON a BF GOODRICH ALL TERRAIN tire. man was he STOOPID! i LOVE IT WHEN THEY GO "POP" under my tires! another dead PRICK! |
Skunks eat crickets....
Poor little kitty cats, all unloved and misunderstood. Time for bed.... |
I think that I have one skunk that lives in my backyard... Bastage waits till about 10:30pm and then must spray all under the house. If I ever catch him I will dissect him with a hammer...

I do live in the country. We have skunks living under the bedding shed at the barn. They don't bother the horses, the dogs ignore them (although our blind dog has stumbled over one, with stinking results). They do hunt for food in the daytime. Now coyotes, that's another story. Not welcome around here at all. I know they are here, but they receive a firm reminder of their status whenever one shows its nose, so they tend to stay out of sight. Best Les |
I live in a rural setting too and couldn't fathom killing an animal like that. Just cruel, stupid and unnecessary. Skunks won't bother you if you leave them alone and just let 'em do their rummaging and go on their merry way.
I have no problem with animals on the property, none. I've had deer, a fox or two, some hawks, squirrels, etc. If they come in the house, it's a different story but if they're just running around the yard digging for grubs I could care less. It's only grass and most of it is being ripped out soon and replaced with stonescaping and/or hardscaping soon anyway. If I gave a crap about a lush green lawn I'd hire a golf course turf manager. Bugs (particularly the biting/stinging kind) are killed on sight. Spiders outside I don't care about. Spiders inside the house get relocated outdoors. I don't understand how some people can seemingly wack off to the thought of blowing some innocent animal's brains out for doing nothing other than living its life (especially if not destroying anything of value). Just dumb, boorish and stupid. |
Jeff, I take no thrill in knocking off a skunk, but they are a very prolific carrier of rabies, and when they get up near the house, they are paid for. I'm sorry but I'm not risking one of my two mutts getting that.
Les, don't you get tired of all your stuff smelling? And I wouldn't let that happen, when one of your dogs gets rabies, don't complain about it. No way in hell would I let skunks live under any of my buildings. Not a smart idea.... |

There doesn't seem to be rabies in the skunk or fox population in Nova Scotia. However, the dogs and horses have had their shots. The only smell I deal with at the barn is horse $h!t. For several years momma skunk has raised 4-5 little ones there with (aside from Colby, who doesn't see) no problems. We do get a smell when they get killed on the road, despite the driveway being 1/4 mile long. I must admit it is inconvenient some evenings, coming home and finding a skunk or two foraging in the grass alongside the driveway, but I am semi-retired and not in that much of a hurry. Best Les |
The biggest entry into a crawl space should be no more than 1/4". It's a bad idea to have critters under your house.
Critters are target practice. Specially skunks and coyotes. And porcupines. |

For de-skunkung a dog or other items that got sprayed there's a wash available at pet stores that uses enzymes to kill the stank.

OP, does that thing kick like a mule? it's got no mass...
