These killed two in my sister's back yard yesterday. I'm not a big fan of them killing things but they have too much prey drive to expect otherwise. They also dig much bigger holes than the chipmunks themselves.

hahhaha yea of course im kidding. i do get damn annoyed when people tell me how proud they are that they finally poisoned all their chipmunks. i just dont get it

i just love those little guys. come on. didnt anyone have gerbils or hamsters as a kid?

then again, i admit that i wouldnt even kill a rat. i have a strange connection to rodents i guess

its not like im going to starve to death if they nibble on my basil plants or make little holes

i will confess something. when i was 10 i had one of those fancy wrist sling shots and i hit a chipmunk in the head with a rock and smashed its brains and i will never forget the site of that little thing twitch and then die. it broke my heart and i vowed i would never hurt one again. that was the last time i intentionally killed a mammal. i live for fishing but i apparently do not have what it takes to be a hunter

I'm revisiting this thread because the little fellas have gone nuts and are very large in number due to my yard being a rich feeding ground. So, I'd like to trap and re-locate. The current version of Hav a Heart traps have gotten very bad reviews. Do you guys know of any other small live trap brand that is good quality?

This one has a home in the rock retaining wall. Our Border Collie is completely clueless. Could hardly catch a cold. The upside is this summer we got 8 oak seedlings to replant because the little bugger can't remember where he hid his acorns. Fair deal.

Of course an appropriate dog would help, but in my area the foxes, coyotes, hawks, and stray cats have reduced the problem in my yard and adjacent areas considerably.

I don't have the garden problem you do, but what helped get the little buggers out of their holes (and out of the rock wall in the back of my yard) was moth balls. If your plants can tolerate it, you may want to try that.

I really hate these litter buggers. A few years back they tunneled under my concrete front porch and have caused one side of it to settle. It would not surprise me to learn their tunneling contributed to the route 80 interstate highway collapse that closed that road in my area for several months.

That was brutal. Those chipmunks would have had to be YUGE. :D

I don't have chipmunks here, but gophers, moles, and the devil spawn to my lawn voles.

Have a decent mole trap with giant spring loaded scissor like deals that are sprung by compressing the tunnel and placing the trap lever in the depressed area so when they push the tunnel back up BANG!! Only see one or two moles a year.

Gophers are a bit more of a challenge. Need multiple traps, I use 3 or 4 and set them in a tunnel and all of the offshoots from it. I used to wear gloves to not have my smell on the traps, but heard from one of the local German Orthodox kids (think Amish that drive cars and adults use cell phones, beards, bonnetts and men in brim hats) that is you rub onion or garlic on your hands it works better. The gophers smell the onion or garlic and think roots to nibble on.

Voles? They are by far the hardest to get rid of. Traps and poison pellets don't work, neither do gopher gasser smoke. I tried a castor oil product to no avail, nothing worked until I found a product called Plantskydd repellant. I think it's a bloodmeal red pepper based product. It's expensive, but has been the only thing I found that keeps me sane...

Update
Well after doing a critical assessment of the negative online reviews regarding the performance of the current Hav a Heart traps I decided that those users were not setting up the trap properly. I bought the trap and Mr Ramone will be pleased to hear that I've successfully trapped and released several of the critters already.

Other than a possible lingering mis-trust of peanut butter there was no harm to the little dudes. Although a visit with a chipmunk therapist might be advisable.

A neighbour across the road leaves peanuts for chipmunks/squirrels. They bury them all over the place.
She also feeds pigeons so we have to deal with them as well.
