WTH??....my 17 year old son has common sense?

My son has been looking for a used commuter and personal use car for himself. He originally was looking at Integras and 2 door Civics. He found that most had been pretty well abused and really did not fit his lifestyle.

He plays baseball and loves to golf. He has a group of friends that they all play together and car pool to practice/games/golf courses....etc. He just did not see how he could do 4 friends in the cars he was most interested in and all their stuff.

He changed his mindset and started looking at 4 doors with good sized trunks, but still reasonable gas mileage.

This is what he ended up buying last night for $3500. 1995 Lexus ES with 130,000 miles. Just tuned, tranny flush-fluid-filter, timing belt, alternator belt, oil change, tires, battery and water pump. It has 17 inch Lexus IS wheels on it rather than the original 15's and the body, paint and interior are in excellent condition. The only issue is a couple of the dash indicator needles are burnt out.

I let him do all the check out of the car and accessory functions and helped him ask all the right questions. Kind of a right of passage and I think he did pretty good for his first endeavor into the car buying world.

It is common knowledge that baseball players are the brightest bulbs

Nice ride.

I bet they checked the four bag option in the trunk!

That is surprisingly "mature."

When I was 17, my only interest was girls (preferably of the naked variety) and my first car was a 914-6.

Wow, I'm going to be looking for a deal like this soon. I doubt I will do as well as he did.

My 1st car was a 1976 Camaro, so I obviously had no common sense...

The ES's are good cars, but look out for a sludge problem with the oil. If the car is going to be driven on many short trips, consider having your son change the oil more frequently. Other than the sludge issues, they are great cars...

The sludge problem started with the 97-98's with the variable valve timing engines.

Mine was a 944... And then a corrado.... And then sold that and got a 924s...

I dd a corolla, but that is against my wishes. At 21 I still haven't figured out how to pick a "sensible" car. I know what they are, I just have no use for one.

You couldn't have gotten me to drive that car at 17 short of GIVING it to me. Shoot, at 26 I feel the same way. My first car, oddly enough, was an Integra coupe. Great car.

But as they say, different strokes for different folks.
