What does "Up For Sale" mean?
I see this all the time on CL and feeBay. It usually starts out saying, "Up for sale is this [place adjective(s) here][place noun here][and run on sentence remainder here].
Is this just some form of illiterate speech? |

Could it be like when they bring an item "up" for bid at a live auction?
Many times the item could be physically "up" off the ground for all to see prior to the sale. Just a thought. KT

I know it's a really stupid question. It just irritates me. I don't go around telling people I have something "up" for sale. It's like well now it's that item's turn. You're up!
I guess I can see someone saying, "I have something coming up for sale." Nevermind. Silly me. |

probably comes from "putting something up for auction." literally taking it to the front and holding it front of others.
i hate the phrase "put that up" when referring to telling somebody to put something away. completely hillbilly.

No different than the "fixing to" phrase in the south.
ex. When are you going to work?, "I'm fixing to." What are you doing? "Fixing a sandwich." "I'm fixing to go to the store, do you need anything?" and yes, i say it ALL the time... cant help it... |

I believe its origin comes from putting an item up on the auction block, because at one time items for auction were literally put up on a block or stage.

It's like saying "up for grabs" except money will need to exchange hands.

My bit of a rant is a sign in a car saying-for sale. Why is that term used?
Why not just -selling-
