Is this an angrier world....

now than it used to be? Or do these forums make people more aggressive because it is a faceless form of communication? I notice that the rules of the forum are hardly followed. My advice?
Chill out. It lowers your blood pressure. Am I right or wrong?

Nah, I think what you see here in OT is a place to vent amongst friends.

Kind of like going down to the pub and airing it out with your buds.

But the interesting part is many times what you want to vent strikes a chord with someone else who has the need to vent an opposing point of view and it's off to the races.

It's all good.

I've learned a lot here, rejoiced with others here, cried here, I would not trade this place and it's people for anything.

Well maybe not anything but you get the point.

Angry? Who has the energy to be angry? All my energy goes into laughing at everything.

Well, I would say yes, thanks to the entitlement mentality, more people are self centered. With the "All About Me Mentality" comes people getting pissed for little of no reason. I'm old school, if I'm going into a building and someone is a few steps behind me, or headed out, I hold the door for them & let them in before me, that simple gesture really surprises some people, but I was raised to do things like that, and really, is it so hard to hold door for the next person??

Well, I would say yes, thanks to the hormone levels in our water and food supply.

These hormones are well known to promote impulsive behaviors, including anger.

I almost said "dis-inhibit" but I figured some one would get angry if I did.

I think it is.

I also think people these days have an overwhelming sense of entitlement and righteousness, they think their time is more valuable than it really is, and they think they are more important than anyone else.

Get these inconsiderate, opinionated righteous people together and soon you have anger.

Just my .02c.

EDIT: looks like Byron beat me to it. He's right. It's the self entitlement factor. Everyone has the right to everything and yet no one is responsible for anything.

I think the world is a meaner place than it was in the past.

I think many who come here use it to ventm a la the corner pub, or whatever have you. The anonymity of a place like this creates a situation that removes much of the nuance that exists in real life conversations. For example, I type something ludicrous, tongue in cheek, you miss the sarcasm and I am a moe-ron, not so funny as I think. I suspect there is as much miscommunication as there is rancor. Somebody having a bad day makes a sarcastic comment they would not say to your face. I am perhaps optimistic. No consequences for ill behavior, how some respond to that can be, disappointing.

Mean people suck

If that's true, Weeby, it fits... some of the impulsive anger expressed is like what is termed as 'roid rage.

But the fact that it fits doesn't make it true.

Would love to peruse some links if you have 'em. Here or PM.

Another factor "may be" the acceptaveness (I know, not a real world) to violence in the media(TV, movies, video games, some music, ect), it has nullified many to things that many of us would have never dreamed of as kids..

This is very, very sad, but spells out some of what I think the problems are..

its the fluoride in the water

Ripper: Mandrake. Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rainwater, and only pure-grain alcohol?
Mandrake: Well, it did occur to me, Jack, yes.
Ripper: Have you ever heard of a thing called fluoridation. Fluoridation of water?
Mandrake: Uh? Yes, I-I have heard of that, Jack, yes. Yes.
Ripper: Well, do you know what it is?
Mandrake: No, no I don't know what it is, no.
Ripper: Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous Communist plot we have ever had to face?

I think the world is the same, if not tamer. They used to bash each others heads in with rocks or throw people into a well.
Now we just argue.

Maybe if you think things are tougher, you should read about some of the earlier ways of dissolving disputes. Duels, jousting, beheadings, guillotines, crucifictions, drowning, hangings, burying alive, burning, etc.

Maybe your a girl?

I don't have anything for a general audience, but did find this. Dunno how much of it you can access:

John Jeyes Lecture. Environmental chemical influences on behaviour and mentation - Chemical Society Reviews (RSC Publishing)

The general field is called behavioral neuroendocrinology...

BTW - I'd beware of anything in the field that IS for a general audience - this is an area of research that is very much a frontier - not at all like the circulation of the blood or something - and might be full of crazy new-age people writing books or something.

or angry people writing books...

Tell us about her again.

that reminds me of something - a few weeks ago Charlie Rose did an interview with a guy at one of the Ivy League schools IIRC, who was saying that the net amount of violence in the world had gone down progressively. psychologist, maybe

tabs may have the info in his database of Charlie Rose shows.

I had a confrontation with some young crap bag on my front porch today. Little ahole shows up and tries to give me some BS about how he's raising money for a school trip of some kind. Claimed he was my 'neighbor'.

I let him talk for about 10 seconds before I cut him off and said, "What do you want?" He was angry that I had seen right though his BS, and started yell, 'Yo, that no way to treat a neighbor! F**k you man!, yeah, F*ing ahole," blah, blah, blah. I yelled after him, "Have a nice day!".

Anyone who does any kind of real work in the country is getting nickeled and dime to death, and on top of that, you have human schit like this kind trying to scam people. Yeah, I thinks its an angrier world, and its only going to get worse.

We don't even answer/open the door for 'em anymore, HardDrive... saves a lot of time and annoyance.

Try it sometime... do it just once and it'll cure you forever.
