what do you think is people's hangup about organ donation?

my mom's cousin. fantastic man. helped me alot thru life. sadly, he couldnt kick the habit of smoking. he smoked from the hospital of his triple bypass..he heart failed, and he was hooked up to some portable heart assist machine..(pumps in series?)

well, now he quit smoking. he was on a heart donor recipient list. it looked dire. you literally have to almost die to get a good position on that list. he moved to houston to wait. at a doc's visit, he passed out right there in the exam room. he was rushed to ER, and was about to die. he got put to the top of the list, and immediately got a heart. the heart was dog-eared for another person. he is still unconscious, but alive. my family was stoked that he got a heart. then i got thinking about the poor person that had the heart snatched from him.

despite my abused organs, they are free for the taking if i should die properly for harvesting. take it, i assume i'm done with them. kinda nice knowing my package is not 100% dead. maybe a nice lady takes my kidney to paris or something

why doenst everyone like donation? is it a religious thing? what % of the population opts for donation?

doubt it was snatched..
your cousin was just a better candidate..
there is only so much time to use it..
& probable outcome..

lots of reason..
often the family jumps in at the last minute..
folks worry about being cut up..
& Dr are often reluctant to ask..

have been to a few harvest operations..
everyone is professional & respectful..
on one mission..
we had4 Helos waiting....
2 Lears running up on the flight line as well..
that Lady helped alot of folks..
we left with eyes, skin, bone, heart & more

No problem here regarding donating the remains. I'm listed for full body donation. The papers are signed and sealed.

I think people just have a hard time coming to grips with death, and don't like the idea of their organs being removed. There are some who don't for religous reasons, but for the most part I think most people just don't bother.

Some stats: Organ Donation Statistics in the United States | NYODN US1

Anyone can have my organs when I'm done with them.

I would be concerned that I would become more useful as an organ donor and was relieved of them before I was done with them.

I may become unpopular here.

I think organ donation and the donors who choose to are extremely generous people. In fact - I'm not sure it is possible to be any more generous.

When we got married many years ago I asked my wife to stop being an organ donor. I am also no a donor.

Some of this is a little about my spiritual feelings, my feeling of respect for the dead but there is also a part of me that simply cannot let go of the decision I may be putting into a Doctor I do not knows hands if for some reason my wife was not around (or vice-versa).

I can't do it. Now, in the case where I am there and I know my wife's wishes are to donate I can and would make that call.

My own wishes are to not to however. I also do not want an autopsy done unless there is some overwhelming reason to.

In death I wish my body to be left in peace.

I'm a donor, but I don't feel generous about it. I won't be using them anymore, so it's no skin off my nose if somebody else takes 'em around the block.

Exactly. I don't plan to leave much life in 'em, but if they want to give them to someone else, why the hell not....

My view is that people are lazy and just don't want to fill out the paperwork.
When I'm PM of Canada it will be a mandatory thing, you will automatically be a donor, unless for whatever reason you don't agree to this then you fill out the paperwork to not be included in the donor program. The gov't here provides basically free health care, takes care of you for free so should be allowed to take your organs without your consent, unless you do the paperwork to opt-out of the program.
I've talked to many people over the years about this and most say sure take them if it will help somebody, most of these same people were not donars because they couldn't be bothered with the paperwork. Donorship will rise and the selfish people, or the people who don't want to do this for any other reason will have to do the paperwork not the other way around.
I'll get a lot of neg. print for this and I don't care, this is my opinion and like hearts, kidneys, pancrease etc and *********s , everyone has one.

Some liken a signed donor card to a "do not resuscitate" order... would a doctor actually not save your life because they have a customer for your organs? Pul-eeze!

When I'm gone, I'm gone. Harvest away, save some lives.

I think a lot of people don't think about stuff like this until THEY have a need, friend, family, or themselves. Sometimes that can be the wake-up call to sign the paperwork.

Personally, I give blood 4x/year, full organ donor, and am on the blood marrow registry.

Did you know that most blood marrow donations are actually done via blood and no longer involve surgery? It's easy to sign up. Just takes a cheek swab...

Be The Match: Hope for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, blood cancer and sickle cell disease

I am donating my organs. Now let the hospitals and doctors donate their time and space. You'll never see that!

Non-profit hospitals are a scam along with the rest of our health care system. Non-profit my arse! Check it out. They make tons of money, but are classified as not for profit because they provide some services to the community without compensation. So they don't pay taxes and the admins and board of directors are getting rich as kings. This is the joke no one has heard. And it's on US!

Donor and provide blood but unable to sign up for Bone Marrow... not allowed after stroke... I would do my body after death but I want to be near my son and Mom and have somewhere where my family can visit. When Mom died I purchased the plot right next to hers for me and my son... IF my son were to die, I would donate all I can from him as well... not sure how it works with people who have an extra chromosone though.. need to resaerch that.

Paperwork done, and filed here. I doubt that they'll be any good though. I'm pretty rough on my body. But hey, if someone gets an extra few years out of them, all the better.
