Anyone ever planned a Literature Festival?
I'm planning a literature festival for my town 9-8-12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be the first year any events at our new Clock Tower plaza have happened and this is my contribution to the planning commission I represent. I have a grad student planning a writing contest, local authors, local publisher, local coffee shop to provide coffee and scones, etc. We will have a large tent for workshops and readings. Anyone have any experience and or ideas for such an event?

Do you have a featured author? Maybe someone local that has become famous? Or a classic author and follow that theme? You know, maybe F. Scott Fitzgerald or Twain or??? And have people dress in costumes for their favorite characters?

We have a key note speaker who is famous in some circles. There isn't a theme per se, but the festival will be focusing mainly on 19th century Americana. It is an up and coming era for literature study. I would describe it as the literary equivalent of America's arts and crafts movement.
It was chosen because the Midwest was a hub of American Folk literature. An example is author Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924). I kind of like the idea of the stringed quartet. I'll have to keep my ears open for a group, pun intended. The costume thing has been discussed, I may need to bring it up again.

This differentiates the festival with much of the classic literature most people think of in books -Dickens, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Byron, Shelley, etc.

Tie it in to an Occupy protest.
