Audi A6 with dead transmission...

I've got a '99 A6 Quattro Avant (wagon) with a dead transmission. (I followed a nice trail of hydraulic fluid home one evening to find my wife's car with a dead transmission, but that's a different story....) My diagnosis indicates blown front input seal.

No Audi-bashing, please. You can all say "I told you so" later.

Dealer is offering $1200 trade-in value. (Dealer also quoting $6500 for transmission replacement.) I'm sure I can part it for more than trade-in and can certainly replace tranny on my own - I just don't want to deal with it. I'd rather get the Porsche running.

What do you all a private-party sale for such a vehicle in otherwise good shape would be worth? (Black on black, cold weather package, leather, straight body, drives fine, ~145k miles.)

I don't know specifics but the issue as I see it is that unless a DIY type purchases the car and is absolutely positive of the fault, the vehicle isn't worth a new transmission. Could you part it for more than 1200?

I'm not sure about your local market, but a good friend just sold theirs, exactly like yours with new Audi transmission, new front suspension, and new timing belt service for $6000. I thought it was all the money, but it was an amazing one owner car. I hope this helps.

Locally, my technician will rebuild the ZF transmission for $1250 and give a one year warranty
A new Audi trans (not rebuilt) is the only way to ensure a long life
It's very common

Good luck

Hello Fan Audical,
My good friend here near chicago could fix your tranny if you send it to him for a reasonable. He IS the go to Audi trans guy and has done probably more than 4 dozen including my own D2, A8. He completely removes everything from the bell housing, replaces all the O rings and torque converter. IMVHO, since the new components are new and more robust, it is better than new.
I only mention this because I find it a kind of amazing feat. You could look him up on the Quattorworld D2 forum, or PM me and I will give you his email address.
He may even have one on the shelf he could ship / swap out to you.
I have no financial stake in whatever the two of you may work out.... fwiw.

Agreed - Probably not worth the new transmission. KBB puts this car ~$6800 if bought from a dealer. Looking around I can find guaranteed rebuilt trans for ~$2450.

Kaisen and Arbil - Thanks for the possible leads.

I can certainly swap the trans or part it out - I just don't want the headache and don't have the time.

Have you considered converting it to a manual trans?

Automatic or manual?

"Front seal" as input from crankshaft or side-seal where axle attaches? Anyway...it should be fairly straight-forward job, depending on if you need new tranny or can just re-seal and fill-up the old one.

I have considered the manual trans conversion - but this is the "wife's car" and she prefers automatic.

Any reason you don't want to replace the seal and keep driving the car? That has to be less money than replacing the tranny. Or, replace the seal and sell the car, assuming the seal fixes the problem.

I suspect the front input seal. I think the car was driven 10-15 miles with the trans mostly empty. I just don't have the time or motivation to pull the trans and repair the seal or replace the trans...

A black Audi wagon? (BAW). Gimme that SOB!

Seriously, I'd be interested if it was local. I buy broken cars sometimes if they're otherwise clean/nice. Not sure that it would work out after shipping, though.

There seem to be 5-6 A4 and A6 Audis with dead transmissions on Craigslist LA every day. I would think someone with an expedient and moderately-priced fix could make a ton of money.

Slushboxes might stop driving before damaging gears, due to torque converter not working. So it might had survived. It's worth a try. You'll need a seal and couple liters of Dexron...and a bit time
