I feel sofa king stupid....

Y'all ever do something that you KNOW you're gonna regret a couple of days later? Like chain sawing through a big azz tree that was covered in 1" poison oak vines wearing only a tee shirt? I'm an idiot...that is all

Both arms covered....at least I had a shirt on

Some of my country family friends decided they would save money buy cutting down a dead tree on their property for firewood. The entire family helped cut it down and cut into logs and stacked it into two ricks of wood ready to go. Then everyone came down with horrible poison ivy. The dad had to be hospitalized.

Then they realized the had two ricks of wood they could never burn in the fireplace.

They left it alone and sold that house and moved to a city property.

Wash your arms in cold water and clorox.

I can look at poison oak/ivy and break out.

That's probably where they belonged in the first place....I generally get poison ivy about once a year, from stomping through the creek/treeline on my property. I keep a bottle of caladryl handy. I only ever had to get a shot at the doctor's office once.

I put mustard on it and eat the stuff for lunch now days. Do you think you can build up an immunity to it over time?
Both my shop property, and my home were overgrown with brush , ivy, and just general ugliness. I've been clearing for 15 years non stop now a little bit at a time . I still get it once in a while, but not very severe anymore
We took down a few trees covered in it last summer, my nieghbor was in pure agony, and covered . I only had some small pock marks, and a little itchiness.
Now the stuff that is down at our rental houses, makes me suffer . Must be a different strand or something, cause it tears me up .

I tend to have pants on when using the chainsaw, but it does sound fun.

seriously - good luck with the caladryl.

Whenever I see it or anything vinous with 3 leaves I whack it with RoundUp and wait a day.

I actually find relief in the hottest water I can stand...I too can look at it and catch it, my dad could wash with the leaves and never does

I usually get into it a bit during the summer months on my rural property, but figured the juices weren't flowing that much in those 1" vines this time of year...live and learn.

And Bill, I didn't capture your post, but just LOL'd...hey, I was in the middle of the woods, a warm day for Feb, and the pants just HAD to come off

I knew better, but I AM SOFA KING...this is nothing like some rashes I've had in the past. As a kid, I got it all the time, then went a few decades where I didn't seem to be so susceptible, but now I'm reliving my youth once again...

If I catch it early - Technu is the bomb.

For the rest of the time (please consult a professional or at least someone smart because this is probably a stupid idea) - I use lacquer thinner.

Remember that any tools you have used will have it on them. Clean those with lacquer thinner too. They'll scream less than you do when the lacquer thinner is applied.

Yep, once you've bathed and washed the oil off, it's done. If it seems like you are breaking out later, it's because some skin reacts at different rates than other skin.

Yeah, it's really just a wash to use if you realize that you were exposed.

Yep, super hot water until it stops itching. Then you'll have relief from the itching for a few hours. Calamine lotion isn't bad, but nothing was as effective for me as hot water.

I would get it very mildly for many years and had no idea what it was. I eventually figured it out. For me, my reaction seemed to get worse over the years, but still relatively mild.

Some folks don't have reactions to the oils. There are folks on the other end of the scale who will die if they come in contact and don't get immediate treatment.

That won't help at all. The oil is still there in the leaves.

And, do not burn it and breathe the smoke.

Just stay away.

(Adtually I've read that slightly less than half of all people are sensitive to Poison Ivy/Oak.)

I grew up across the street from a large creek that was full of poison oak. Just looking for red leaves is not good enough. As kids my friend and I got a really bad case one summer and we both needed medical attention. PI/PO is not something to take lightly.

I will second that. I rub down whenever there is a slight possibility that I have made contact. Even after I get a patch somewhere that I missed, scrubbing it with this stuff, wash it off and the rash dries up much faster.

Don't know if it helped for sure or not, but I had a some PO on my property. I put a dilute solution of water and dish soap in a sprayer & sprayed it. After I finished with that, I followed up with RoungUp. Haven't had any for years, but like I say, I don't know for sure if that process caused it to die off.
