When I did the last service on my 328, Ferrari was out of basic things like brake rotors and shocks. Not going to make them again, either. Brembo used to make the rotors, then they quit. Lately, someone has surfaced with a batch of them they found somewhere and 328 owners are busy snapping them up. When those are gone, then what? My Testarossa had a first gear that started failing before 15k miles. Not the synchro, the gear itself. It was just a bad gear. Opening up a TR gearbox isn't for the faint of wallet. The guy that owns the car now is a friend of mine and he just went through the fusebox problem. I think it has all of 22k miles on it at this point and has been serviced regularly. It's just one of those things. They have poorly made fuseboxes (probably from the same company that made the 348 electrical parts....:D). Sooner or later, they'll all need one. The car needs tires now, too. No options exist for the rear (and it's not a TRX wheel), short of changing to a different size wheel. The center lock design of the wheel makes that a difficult thing... I used to think that I should just sell my cars and buy something that didn't have any big issues waiting to bite me in the ass. The trouble is, I don't know of a Ferrari that fits that bill. Think you'll ever see the day when you can't get a brake rotor for a 911? I don't think so... JR |

I own both... 88 testarossa and 87 930...
The Ferrari is neat. It's one of those things you have to own at least once. I have owned it for 8 years, total maintenance has been about $2000. The guy before me spent $20,000 plus on a major right before I bought it. If something breaks, the cost will make you cry. Maintenance, will make you cry. I plan to do the major myself, parts alone are $2000 plus.... I bought the 930 because it was cheap to fix, and you could drive aggressively without fear of breaking it. This is my 7th or so Porsche. Testarossa.... blown diff? 15,000$ Broken window? 4000$ Engine rebuild? 45,000$ Major service? 10,000 or so is common... For the price of a testarossa major, I can rebuild a 930 motor ... Totally different price points... The testarossa stops traffic, gets pulled over every other trip by the police, and can't be parked anywhere for fear of damage. Its a super car with corresponding pricing. The car is a steal right now.... The 930 is totally cool... Oddly, if I had to sell one, it would be the Ferrari. The cost of repairs and the inability to leave it anywhere makes it tough to enjoy... |
Wow..you guys had fun with this thread! Some interesting points of views.

I would rather have the 550 Maranello (six speed) than the TR.
The brakes on TR are not very big and will fade, I can remember installing Alcon kits on them in 90s. The timing belt service and all the other work that goes with that is also a pain. 930 wins out everytime on all aspects. |
Funny thought about the TR. Realistically as a low production car, its amazing the number of prior owners. Then I think of Porsche 911 turbo production, substantially higher but the owners tend to hold them.

For the money: I'd buy my old '62 XKE roadster I sold for $8,500 back in the early '80's........Serious

The 930 - the cost of upkeep, parts availability and mod-ability are far superior to the Testarossa. The 930 will make a great sunday track car. Would you take the Testarossa?

Here you go, a $240,000 V12 Ferrari for $39K.
If you don't mind a Ferrari that looks like a weird cross between a Ford Probe and aHyundai. Lake Forest Sportscars 1997 Ferrari 456 GTA - http://www.lfsc.com/galleria_images/407/407_p6_f.jpg |

I had a 390 gt and I don't think that I've spun all of my other cars 1/2 as much as I spun that car. It handled much better than it should have in the dry. bring in fog or rain and the bus was a better option. The reason that that car is asking an extra 8-10k is the 427 engine. It's the samethat went into cobras and other fast as snot cars. |
hmm, no parts, ridiculous 80's wedge and disproportionate styling- Pass.
930. With that said- That car was the poster child of 80's excess. YOu just need a blonde in spandex riding shotgun with 12" tall hair to finish it off. |
just buy this and save the change for a 930
It'll look good next to the Velvet Elvis picture http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1335893598.jpg

Oh, lastly. Buy a F355 if you have that itch. Make sure the valves are done.
