I knew this was coming eventually. We have Skunks in our area, and they walk through our yard occasionally. Every time one does, the four dogs - led by Sara, my Greyhound - go flying out the door to investigate. I usually get them in the house before anything happens.
Not this time! Ugh!! It is the most god awful smell I've encountered. It's that skunk smell we all know so well, that makes us close our doors and windows when one is nearby... X1000! Sara got nailed in the mouth, face, and chest. One of our other dogs got some over-spray on his back and neck area. BOTH dogs got baths with some concoction my wife found on-line, but not before Sara puked near my side of the bed on the carpet, which now smells like skunk. Oh, and she puked all over the love seat too, which is now out in our front courtyard, probably to be taken by the trash-men this Tuesday. Jeez. ![]() So, now I guess I play the waiting game, hoping my soiled carpet will air out and the smell will fade away eventually. Sleep last night was not so sound. |

My German Shepherd got nailed twice. She was a longhair too. Nasty.

Believe it or not, tomato juice will help kill the smell.

Sounds awful. Are they a protected species or can you "take care" of them?
If it was my yard they'd be shot on site. Not nice but they sound like a filthy animals.

Scott,
I feel for ya. Be prepared for that smell to linger for a few months. Our Boxer/ Pit mix got nailed in the face and chest about a year and a half ago when we were camping. I think we must have used up $20 bucks worth of quarters in the "pay" showers that night. Her collar was left right where we took it off. She usually gets a bath about once every two weeks. Every time she would get wet, the skunk smell would reconstitute itself. ![]()

Yeah, but what about the carpet and couch? Sorry, Scott, that sounds awful. I guess skunks are one thing the coyotes leave alone.

Our dogs have been hit 4-5 times in the last two years. Only one of the skunks made it out alive.... We've tried everything from tomato paste to the above concoction which works the best. It will reduce the smell, but every time they get wet for the next year or so you will get a faint whiff of skunk...

Our skunks in Texas were used to us and our animals. Never had an issue. Trespassers on the other hand were dealt with by skunks!!!!

At least dinner is at a brewery. That'll help mask the smell.

Still does not solve the problem 100%, but will definitely help the situation.

We had a young skunk wander into our back yard and nail out little rat terrier. The dog killed it but at full price. Kids let him inside while they were headed out...never caught a whiff. Pup stayed in the house a few hours until we came home from work. What a pong!
Skunks are considered pests here and can legally be dispatched on sight. If you have a county or city animal control office, they may deal with them for you. I've heard they make excellent little pets if you catch them very young and have them de-glanded.

Haha! No WAY that would happen with Sara. Had the skunk not blasted her, we would've had a dead skunk on our couch.

Actually they're quite friendly. I've run up on quite a few in the wild while working and have never had a problem. Now I don't try to pick them up or mess with them and I sure won't let a dog near them but I've never had one pay me any attention. They do eat snakes and rats so for that reason alone I won't shoot one.

Yea, I've encountered them in close proximity on a few occasions and they've always been friendly and seemingly nonchalant about my presence; never any aggression shown toward me at all. I suspect that when a dog comes after them and corners them, it's DEFENSE time. The result is awful.
