Social Media Radar Detector
I picked up a new Escort Radar (9500) unit and also picked up the "Live" unit. It basically uses blue-tooth to connect to your phone and the Internet. It both records your radar contacts, send them to the Internet, and receives Internet data about other people's contacts. This information is relayed INTO the radar detector including distance rundown. You can also press a single button to record a "Live Cop", basically marking where a unit is, which is not transmitting RADAR or LASER. The phone app can be used in map mode to see other people's contacts.
It saved my butt big-time yesterday. I had a LASER alert 3/4th of a mile ahead, coming from the Internet database. Sure enough, behind an overpass and hidden in the grass was a Texas DPS using Laser. It would never have been picked up otherwise. I'm not sure what was going on between Baytown and Beaumont, but there were DPS about ever 5 miles. Usually, there is 1 about every 60 miles. Probably a sweep. They seemed to be interrogating the people they pulled over, out of the car in the grass at the side of the road.

James,
I used to frequent that part of I-10 going back and forth between BR. I would ALWAYS see State troopers. It's my thinking that they are looking for drug runners in between the two cities.

I shoudl say that I'm used to seeing a cop about every 60 miles when driving on the Interstates. I do not drive that section very often. I was also thinking it might be drug sweeps. All DPS and most were not in Crown Vics, but some sort of SUV.

Finally - social media has become useful for something other than narcissistic ego boosting.

Yup, I use Waze.
First week going up an overpass it alerts me to a cop ahead. Come over the crest and there he is. It's only as good as people collaboratively make it but it's still a leg up.

It is the simplicity of the system, plus that it upload to the RADAR DETECTOR, the information. On the power cord/charger thing there is a button. Press that and it reports a "Live Cop" in that location.
When the internet provides the information, the RADAR DETECTOR still beeps an alert AND then does a distance count down to the location.

Appears to be a good system for documenting, on a data base the authorities can access, one's speed complete with a time and location "stamp".

I saw these in the car magazines and wondered how well they work... sounds pretty cool.
What the heck is Waze?

I use my speedometer... put the needle about 5 mph above the limit and it works great!
Just got hit this morning by a Hiway Patrol guy under the overpass and he took off after the guy next to me who was going a good 20 over...

Well, I have to agree with Joe. No reason to condemn the guy that wants to go the speed limit, or only a bit over.
I can see 80 or 90 out in the middle of nowhere; it's only gas folks. But on well traveled roads or less than ideal conditions, it's irresponsible to go blazing down the highway. If you want to play, you can pay. It's been said here 100's if not 1000's of times, once you spend some time at the track at your limit, you don't have the need for speed when it's not appropriate. |

or real penalty for in city speeds same speed same fine empty interstate or city street and that is nuts yes I know they can add careless reckless ect but seldom do and a modern air bagged car is way safer at high speed then a 57 chevy but we are limited to the same speed and fines again nuts the new toy sounds neat as does the people reporting the cops |
