Auto legend Carroll Shelby died Thursday night at Baylor Hospital in Dallas at the age of 89.
Carroll Shelby's shadow stretched out Texas tall across nearly the whole of the world's automotive landscape. A natural as a race driver, he won three U.S. sports-car championships in Ferraris and Maseratis, and for Aston Martin he won the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans with British co-driver Roy Salvadori.
Turning automaker in the 1960s, he fathered the Cobra, an Anglo-American hot rod of crude conception but stunning effectiveness that swept the tracks of North America and wrested a world manufacturer's title from Ferrari. Additional success came with his makeovers of the ...

RIP Carroll. The Cobra, the XKE jag, Slingshot Dragsters - these were the cars that caused a 5 year old Herr_Oberst to fall passionately in love with cars.

Godspeed, you've earned your rest.

I think calling him a "legend" in the automotive world might be an understatement. Few names have made a bigger impact on the car world than his.

A great "If it does not exist, build it" type of American pioneer. Thanks for the inspiration.

Amazing gent that only looked forward. His long battles with health issues never showed. Godspeed Mr. Shelby

Tribute AC Cobra event. Should be one helluva thundering grid with Carroll hearing it all above.

Hard to imagine Shelby lived as long as he did considering he was diagnosed with a heart condition back in the 50’s and didn’t receive a transplant until the early 90’s only to top that by surviving another 20+ years. There is no doubt in my mind he was a fighter to the last day. He's always been grateful for his new lease on life and made the effort to financially support charities through donations raised from his signature. I think he's signed just about anything you could ever imagine. It’s difficult to imagine what the automotive world would have been like without Shelby. Personally I’m glad he took a hot selling secretary’s car and turned it into a champion race car!
R.I.P. Carroll…...we will miss you!

If I had unlimited money, in the back of my mind there will always be the "Daytona Cobra". A true masterpiece.

This pic on the net says he passed on the 10th.....but whatever, he's still dead.

Rumor had it he paid cash for his heart transplant when he suddnely found a few extra Cobra frames in a lost wharehouse....guy was a real character. Met him a few times. I always wanted to count my fingers after a handshake.
