Which mountain bike would you keep? K2 Evo 2.0 or Specialized Hardrock Pro Disc?

I know a little about bikes, but not a lot.

I've had the Evo for a couple of years. I think I've spent $180 on it for the bike and a new wheel with the original purchase being from Goodwill. Don't really need a full suspension bike and even feel like it hurts me when trying to climb out of some washes on the trails I ride.

Picked up the Specialized from a garage sale last week for $80, but it has a cracked fork. I ordered a used version of the same one from Ebay a couple of days ago. I'll have $120 in it total.

Retail on the K2 was $1000 in 2000, the Specialized was $600 in 2004. So which would you keep - the 12 year old K2 or the 8 year old Specialized?

Sounds like the specialized is more aligned with your needs.

I'd vote Specialized, the FS design on that K2 wasn't very good when it was brand new, and now with 12 years on the clock is probably doing more harm than good when you ride it. The disk brakes on the specialized would also be a nice upgrade from what the K2 has on it.

It measures a little over 20" unloaded. I'm right at 6' and it fits me fine.

The Specialized. The K2 - not a great design and 12 years old with rim brakes. The Specialized, whereas it is not a high-end bike, it's quite adequate, apparently fits you, and has disc brakes - nice upgrade.

It is also probably lighter than the K2.

Specialized seems to keep the weight spec hidden - probably not a good sign. I'm really thinking they weigh about the same. Once I get the replacement fork installed I'll weigh them, just out of curiosity.

I'm interested to see how the Specialized climbs compared to the K2. I'll ride them both a bit before making a decision. I do like the idea of disc brakes, but won't be able to try them out until the fork is in place. I'm sure the Specialized would be an easy sell on Craigslist. Don't know if the same can be said for the K2.

i've ridden my ancient specialized 3 weeks straight. maybe missed one or two days. i dont find my brakes lacking with my XT v-brakes. i did fuss with the toe to keep from announcing to the world i am on the levers. they made a racket!

i am really just trying to justify to myself (and more importantly, to my wife) that i need a new rig. i just saw a $10,000 full suspension specialized mountain bike..that is approaching porsche 911SC money!! eff!

all these bike threads are not helping. at all.

keep the Special Ed and if the K2 has better draileurs or shifters move them over to the special Ed and but the lessor parts on the K@

That or sell both and upgrade ( you don't need a $10,000 Special ed but a $4k bike will last you 10 years)

The level of components on the bikes are pretty much the same. I don't begin to ride enough to justify a $4000 bike. That's why I tend to buy them from Goodwill and garage sales. People in my neighborhood dump some really nice stuff!
