So, Like, I'm a technician......

What is it.............that people think lends credibility to a persons job title........by adding the work "technician" to the operators task?

I'm a pest control technician...... (no, you spray bug killer)

I'm a sanitation technician.........(no, you empty the garbage cans)

I'm a lawn care technician......(no, you mow lawns and run a leaf blower)

Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but I'd assume like as a true "engineer" you need a 4 year accredited college B.S degree, is a "technician" something that just needs a 90 day mail order certificate or other "training"?

I can see an Electronics Technician, as you'd most likely get a 2 year associates degree at a tech school or community college.

pffffftttttttttt.

fluffers.

I guess a UPS or Fedex Driver is a delivery techninian because he can type an address into his Garmin GPS.

Other example you can think of?

I knew a girl once who described her position as a "communications routing specialist". I asked her what that meant and she said she was a receptionist. SmileWavy

Long time ago I was an AVP and my official title was "Commiunications Systems Technical Specialist". Banking...idiots :(

ps: Caveat...at least I was more than qualified (Systems Programmer with a degree in Computer Science) :).

vash 05-14-2012 11:41 AM

in college, i worked at a company. i took a scroll saw and cut out letters from huge sheets of styrofoam. i coated them with textured paint, and painted them. i glued them to buildings.

on my resume, i put down: "outdoor advertising specialist"

so i'm guilty. :D

Instructional Systems Specialist checking in here...

I help teachers deal with technology so they can either teach online or enhance their face2face classes with online resources (exams, hand outs, etc)

How about technician extraordinarie?

Just kidding, However, I have experienced some folks who are sharper at what they do than others. With the same title and others that suck.

"Software engineer" kinda bugs me. I mean engineers are all about optimization. ...efficiency. Code writers just pile code, on top of code on top of code. . . let the hardware improvements (faster CPU's and more memory) handle the ever-expanding pile of code.

In high school I had a job. We called ourselves "Retail Packaging Specialists".

The cashiers call us "bagboys"......:(

It does peeve me a bit that the head maintenance guy at the building next door’s business card reads ‘engineer’. I doubt he’s had one college course; much less the 140+ college hours plus two 8 hour exams I had to pass to be allowed to call myself an engineer in Texas. He's a good guy though so I haven't been a ***** about it (except for here.)

I once had a pest control technician give me a whole bunch of BS about the safety of the pesticides he was spraying -- he did not know who I was. I started out easy with the questions, and as I slowly ramped them up, he switched to telling me that he had over 20 hours of classwork and training. I then explained to him what it takes to get an MD or PhD in toxicology, not to mention what it takes to be able to give those degrees to others...

Remember, if it is measured in hours it ain't worth much (with exceptions for things measured in units of 10,000 hours).

Now, on to sanitation engineers (garbage collectors)...
