Manual, Hand-cranked Coffee Grinders

want one that is good & cheap too

for camping

I have a GSI one (hey! it folds up) but it is hard to use since there is no handle - no way to hold it

These are the best reviewed manual grinders:

I suppose it depends upon your definition of "camping", but there is the original method of using a flat rock and a rounded rock. Oldest and maybe the most cost effective.

Why not get some pulverised Turkish (Greek) coffee instead?

All you need is something to heat up the water with...
Just put in one cup of water and two teaspoons of coffee, sugar. Heat and stir until it simmers but not boil.
Pour into your mug and enjoy.
I drink it every morning and I prefer it to Italian exspresso.

we have some friends. 100% foodie freaks. they hand grind with some burr grinder. at the end of dinner, they go around the table with the grinder. everyone has to participate. you know what? it isnt fun. the handle is too small, no stability. it is like trying to sharpen a pencil with an old school pencil sharpener that isnt fastened to the counter top or wall.

next time, i am whipping out my leatherman and i am going to unscrew that stupid handle and pull out my Dewalt drill. time to step the mofo up!!

coffee does taste a bit better tho. but it isnt worth the effort to me. i would not do it for my morning pot..ever.

I enjoy food and a good cup of coffee even more but that is ridiculous. I support the drill idea, that should start a great table conversation.

How long are you camping for? Just grind it at home.

Sounds like something from the SNL skit "The Californians"

They sell them at REI. They're right next to the pink sleeping bags and hand cranked blow dryers...

Fresh ground or nothing for me... I can just taste the oxidation in preground.

Hand grind is silly at home (I could see it for camping)... I have a Krups burr grinder that has lasted ten years. That and a French press... that is how I roll.
