Another situation where the previous design is more appealing... Well it's better than what Nissan did to the Pathfinder.

Precisely as boring as I expected it to be.

My wife has a 2011 model...I think I like that better than this new one.

Yes, it's a very boring car but actually has great power and so far the reliability has been rock solid.

The front fascia is horrible. I expected a 5000lb heap of beige, but what is going on with the grill?

If it had a trunk, you could call it a ugly new Camaro clone.

We got a great deal on a 2013 in 2wd (I have four other 4x4's, soon to be five) a month or so ago.

Good thing I didn't buy it for you guys

Commenting on the artistic styling of an SUV is a bit like picking the right shade of paint in a Whorehouse, the customer doesn't really care..

Or a Subi, or a Ford, or a...probably nothing in our case.

For us, there is not a Subaru or Honda dealer within 30 miles so when I buy new I stay with the local cars dealers.

I understand that - I bought Toyotas when I lived in the Wyoming outback (tho I could have had a Chevy, and even tried a Ford Exploder for a while).

But it cannot be a big slice of their customer base. You'd think they'd advance things a bit (maybe they have, I'm not familiar with the '14 Highlander).

Meanwhile, Sube has finally announced a move to hybrid drive (Toyota's version!) in their full time AWD cars...

It is interesting, and I won't enter into a which brand is better mainly because I really don't have a sample set other than owning Toyota's and renting other brands, how far Toyota has come in ten years wrt SUVs.

I have a 2003 4Runner that I bought used seven years ago. It has been great: It was my wife's DD but at nearly 200K miles, it was time to give it to me as my DD and get a new prime people mover.

Holding mechanicals equal, more or less (the 4th Gen 4Runners are beasts), the main difference is in human factors and materials.

The 2003 is clumsy at best, the various dials, switches, buttons, as well as the presentation of information ill-placed and seemingly an after thought.

Not so on the 2013 Highlander. It all makes perfectly boring and ordinary sense, just as it should be.

Even the third row seating makes cynics smile.

Should I be so fortunate to inherit the 2013 as my daily driven in 2023, I look forward to it.

The 2003 isn't going anywhere before then.

^ This!

This is just for people that don't want a minivan or station wagon. The underpinnings likely are still all Camry. Works for Toyota, I am sure: Can charge a lot more than Camry money by just adding a bunch of steel, glass and furniture!
