I've known several of the R&T guys over the years, and usually stop by their office when I'm in the area.
They must be thrilled, moving from the bluffs of Newport Beach to Ann Arbor after all of these years. That's going to be a tough move for those guys. Their office in Newport is interesting. They've been in the same location for decades. It is much, much smaller than you'd imagine. They have some cool things there, though, including the Cyclops. |

I'll be laughing at them as they attempt to drive in the snow, as long as they are not sliding me over that is.

Doesn't R&T share its offices with Cycle World? Is Cycle World going to stay put?

Cool!
When in a work truck I travel most of the major freeways and see lots of manufacturer's cars. Up near Milford today I saw a wagon that was all covered in black camo but it appeared to be Ford.....and it was right hand drive. It looked like the new Taurus. Unfortunately, I can't take pics whilst driving a commercial vehicle. I see some pretty cool stuff at the GM Proving grounds as well.

I'll never forget the morning I was going to work when I came to a stoplight and I saw three Ford GT's , each going a different direction. This was about 6 months before they were on sale to the public. Only in Dearborn.

What is it with Ann Arbor getting all these auto mags. located there? Great for winter testing just like Canada!
How cool would it be writing for an auto mag? I used to subscribe to Automobile Mag. but found that I could buy it in the store sooner than it was delivered to my doorstep. I don't buy this mag as much since Jamie Kittman drove to Canada and really did not have much to say good about it. He does however have strange old cars which I think is kind of neat. Some of the writers are kind of flippant. Some are charismatic - eg . deceased Davis E Davis was good and quirky. Yes I would expect auto mags cos. to be located in California, not Michigan. It's too much like the Prairies of Canada. Poor so and so's ![]() ![]()

I grew up in Ann Arbor, and my sister had a boyfriend who worked for Car and Driver. He was a lackey, his job was to drive the cars around for service, fuel, washing, etc. He showed up in nice machines.

Living near there I never saw anything interesting (car-wise).
I never understood why anyone would care what next year's ford fusion is going to look like.

keep in mind that the biggest car show in NA is in Detroit. back in the days, that's the world's biggest car show too.
AA is a great town in MI. it's the test market of all consumer products actually. something about the demographics there. |

The NAIAS is the "premiere" show in North America, but the Chicago Auto Show is the biggest in terms of exhibit space and is longer-running. The big benefit for the press to the NAIAS was it's timing as first show of the year, when most manufacturers wanted to debut their latest models; lately, they've favored the LA Auto Show as it's November timeframe gets them in before the holidays.

Hurst publishing owns both. Money will be saved, but the product will suffer. Oh, hell, the product has suffered for years. Like the above poster said, who cares what the latest Ford Focus upgrades are?

Perhaps they will merge a couple of them to cut down on expenses. Keep the good writers and out with the ...... It must be a tough way to make a living in some respects. It is easy to write about a Porsche, Jag, etc.
Kind of hard to write about Kias, Hyundais etc . Do they draw straws to see who drives a 500hp Bentley or Ferrari across Europe?Do you get a meal allowance? Wine allowance? Or is the sky the limit? Any auto writers out there? Mad Men of 2012 or is my imagination running wild like a Jaguar? |
