Who knows phones? Landlines.

Working out of the house pretty much exclusively these days.

Did not want people calling the home line and did not want to burn cell phone minutes on hours long conference calls. Also wanted a headset for the long calls.

On FIOS. Added a second line. FIOS NID has provision for two separate lines. When house was built CAT 5 was used pretty much everywhere including internal phone lines. One jack accommodates both lines meaning I don't have separate wall jacks for each line.

The phone I picked up is a 2 line RCA. Figured it made sense for it to be able to utilize either line so I don't have to deal with multiple devices. Has 2 jacks in the back for Line 1+2 and Line 2 only.

Tech shows up, hooks up the natural pair but NG. He tries an alternate pair and I can call out and receive on both lines. OK, all set.

The new phone has been doing something odd. It will ring once for apparently no reason thru out the day. No number associated with the incoming call.

Call Verizon, thought maybe it was the digital voicemail service alerting me to a message but that was not it. Verizon can not detect anything wrong. They think it's interference. Call RCA tech support, no help there.

Figured out that it rings every 30 minutes, one time. Timed it over a 2 hour period. and it's dead on 30 minutes.

I disconnect it from line 1+2 and use line 2 only to see if the other phone system is triggering it. 30 minutes goes by and no ring. Hmm. So I call into the line from my cell phone and it does not ring. Odd. I call out from the land line to my cell and it goes thru. Call out from line 2 to line 1 and it goes thru.

So using jack on phone for line 2 only I can call out but no in.

I plug it back into line 1+2 jack and put the phone away for the night but turn the ringer for line 2 off.

I just heard it ring in my office.

Going to go in and turn off the ringer for line 1 and see what happens in 20 minutes. Seems a bit odd because when it rings the phone display says it's line 2 ringing but how can it be ringing if I turned the ringer for line 2 off? Must be ringing on line 1 but phone thinks it's line 2.

What do we think, did Verizon tech hook up the wrong pair?

I'll never get that 5 minutes back

How did he connect up the lines to the cat 5 plug? they should be on pins 4&5 for one line and lines 3 &6 for the other. This of couse is dependant on how your cat 5 is setup end to end.

Sorry bout that, I try to cover as much as I can so there is less back and forth.

Looks like line 1 tip n ring was reversed at the NID.

We'll see what happens in 5 minutes.

If your tip and rig is backwards, I am pretty sure you would still be able to draw dial-tone but I don't think your digits would go out.

Been quite some time since I have worked on stuff like this though.

Tip and ring used to be a bigger deal in the past. Sometimes you intentionally reversed polarity to get stuff to work. Usually due to switching inside a device.

Bad news is the phone is still ringing every 30 minutes.

May have to take it back but there are so few options for 2 line phones with cordless headsets.

Could also be the FIOS setup; how they treat analog to VoIP, call them and have fun with their support guys

Put a meter on the line and see if the voltage spikes past 50 during the ring
