Other (non-Porsche) small displacement hooligan cars

I'm looking for ideas for my next project car. Something non Porsche or VW, like a 510, 2002Tii, Alfa, Mini Cooper, Ford Escort MKII, Volvo 142, etc.. A small and lightweight car from the late '60s or early '70s that is a hoot to drive and autocross. 200hp and less and 2000lbs. What else is out there?

Let's see 'em.

TIA

I don't know about the 60s-70s but a late 80s early Miata will hand give em' a very hard time.

65-69 Corvair. Cheap, easy to work on, great autocross cars, easy to find parts, great enthusiast base. (if you want a great Baton Rouge/ New Orleans contact, let me know). I've been tinkering with them since the early 70's....I'd sell all of my Porsches before I'd let go of any of mine.

My first car was a 4 door Datsun 1600 (ie. 510) with a webered 1800 then 2000 motor. Still like 'em today. We never got the two door versions here and they look even better.

What about a Lotus 7 style build?

roux roux, I sure hope you made it over to the Mitty at road Atlanta in late April.
The place was choked with corvairs, they were impressive on track. Neat deep voice too.

Cheers Richard

Now that's a good idea. Mk1 or MkII. Two door. Very easy to work on and go like stink. Something like a Ford Escort Mexico.

Thanks guys. Some good ideas above. I appreciate the help.

How hard is it to find an Alfa from this era in the US? We're the GTAs & GTA Juniors imported into the US?

200 hp is probably too much. I just want 1hp for every 10lbs of weight. I'd probably buy a project and swap a larger and/or more modern engine into it anyway. Most of my projects end up like that.

26R, less weight so your HP requirements can be less.

Why not a Lotus/LoCost 7 or replica? You can make it weigh as much/little as you'd like, and stuff in an engine with as much power as you'd like.

A Fiat 124 coupe or spider, but you'll have to spend some money to get 200hp.
95hp was factory, iirc. The book by Guy Croft will show you how to get bigger numbers.

Of, get a Fiat Dino (coupe or spider).

Or a Lancia Stratos.

corvair with a V8 in the back seat needs a 66 4 speed trans to work

but unrusted vairs are NOT cheap anymore

how about a 70 corolla with a modern 4 banger DOHC + turbo
or a RX7 motor swapped in

They pop up on BringATrailer.com from time to time, but it might take a while to find one in project ready condition. Many are nicer and ready to go... at least as drivers.

You could try here, too: Alfa Romeo Classifieds Forums - Alfa Romeo Bulletin Board & Forums

MANY are running around with beefy Powerglides.

And maybe there are not many "unrusted" Vairs in your area, but down here they are plentiful and STILL inexpensive.

No need to do the V8 swap, as the regular flat-6 is very competitive with few mods needed.
