I agree the BMI for me is pretty much unobtainable. I am currently obese.

widgeon13 06-09-2012 01:50 PM

6' 1" @ 185 = 24.4, just below overweight. At 170 I'd feel skinny.

Of course every fatarse will claim they have an athletic build and that the BMI doesn't apply to them. I think it is a useful tool and if you are overweight on it, you should lose weight to get to normal or at least to the lower overweight scale.

The US has become so fat, it is unbelievable. I looked at a disney book from the 60s with a picture of the people at the entrance. There wasn't a single fat person in it. They all looked tall and lean.

6' 1" @ 235lbs. Apparently I am obese. According to Aigel I am a fatarse. And to lose weight to get to "normal" region I would basically have to undo years of going to the gym.

If you have to ask- give it up.

Hard-Deck 06-09-2012 02:40 PM

I am 5'7", which gives me 176# by Army standards. I weigh 167# - 18% body fat and I feel overweight. BMI = 27 and I still feel fat/overweight. I can run 1 mi in 6min flat, 2 mi in 14:15, 3 mi in 23:10. My cholesterol is at 190. I believe genetics is the overwheliming fact. Each person has their norm.

Staged...

And animal growth hormones, second hand antibiotics, and natural animal stress reactions has nothing to do with those statistics...
That would be blaming someone else.

D-cups in 13yo girls is completely natural.

Carry on.

HardDrive 06-09-2012 03:21 PM

BMI is extremely counter productive.

Hugh R 06-09-2012 03:50 PM

A BMI calculator says I should lose 5-10 lbs. My belt and my jeans agree. Its tough when you travel a lot.

944Larry 06-09-2012 04:03 PM

according to the Dr that did my last physical, i am "morbidly obese". Of course, after the exam he told me about a good eat place.

azasadny 06-09-2012 05:05 PM

BMI is just one measurement. The most valid one is "how do you feel at the weight you're at" as well as "is your Dr happy with the weight you're at" and my favorite, "do you make excuses for the weight you're at?"...

"do you make excuses for the weight you're at?"...

Yep-I love to eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jyl 06-09-2012 06:44 PM

5' 11" 186 lb
BMI 25.9 "overweight"
I think that is about right, hence I'm vainly participating in the challenge sticky.

stomachmonkey 06-09-2012 07:26 PM

Weight is a pretty good indicator of other issues that when taken together ='s not good.

Weight is the easiest measure of general health.

Family history of diabetes and excess weight, especially weight carried around the middle, are strong risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes. Losing weight greatly reduces your chances for type 2 diabetes and can help bring your blood sugar under control if you already have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can be treated with diet, exercise, and oral prescription medications but may require insulin shots.

It's no joke, get to your proper weight.

sc_rufctr 06-09-2012 07:27 PM

I'm fit but I would have to loose another 20 pounds before I'm at my correct height for weight for my BMI.
The things is I don't know we're that 20 pounds would come from.

I'm short and stocky.

theFONZ 06-09-2012 09:00 PM

5'10" and 175 here, and the Air Force considers me overweight. I guess my 8 mile run in the mountains with a 1000 foot vertical rise followed by some rock climbing this morning wasn't good enough. I also should do two crossfit workouts per day since one obviously isn't cutting it.

Oh, and yes, BMI is crap (unless you are fat).

Jim Bremner 06-09-2012 10:00 PM

If I was at my old Height of 6'2" vs my post back break Height of 6' 1/4" I would be "Healthy" at my new 190# weight. Of course prior to breaking my back I weighted in at 180
