i would love to see some foundation plans..just to see what they went with. this sucks to see a public entity kicked in the nuts with funding being such a hot topic.

2nd tallest - at what looks like 3 stories?

Ummm, maybe that they built on swampland without adequately compensating?

I've been to Morgan City and spent some time with Johnco. The entire area is a swamp.

They probably knew this was going to happen and then blame it on the BP oil spill. Or the local republicans will blame Mary Landrue. Or it could be Obama's fault. Or Bobby Jindals fault for budget cuts. Or it could be racially motivated....no one will take the blame on this, unless they don't payoff the right local politician. Then they'll pin it on some poor innocent fool.

Shame, I know both the contractor and the architect. Both good firms. The geotch engineer will get the blame...

they drove what looked like 40-50' pilings but there's nothing but mud/slop around here. they've been working on that building for maybe 1 1/2-2 years. one day it just dropped

this way it will not be destroyed in the next hurricane

sorry..3rd tallest building. the hospital in 6-7 stories and a bank is 4-5 stories tall. the highest land is the public dump. nothing else taller than 2 stories

They just need to build 3 more...

Chicago was a swamp in the early 1900's. They learned how to build there and even built skyscrapers with their technology.

Who ever did the soil testing or deviated from it, better have insurance...

I'm a geotech. Five feet of settlement in one day must mean bearing capacity failure. But if it was on deep pilings, it's surprising. Of course, I don't know enough about the job to say anything useful, except that the geotech on this job better have good insurance. And ideas for a new career.

I'm not a geotech but I am in the bidness of building BIG things and we drill lots of pilings, down to bedrock, to build anything heavy.......or if we just want it to last. Lots of 'glacial fill" here. Seriously. If you want to building something semi-permanent, or heavy, then you hafta drill lots of deep holes and fill them with rebar and concrete.

And that's the extent of my geotechnik understanding. Nothing is built on the "ground."
