First dog was very very smart. Could have easily been a helper dog for a blind person. Lived 18 years. Was really broken up when she passed. Was not going to get another.
After a few months just had to get another. She was not nearly as smart. Her real saving grace was she talked in English. Mom's speech therapist said she was making all the right sounds, the only reason it wasn't perfect it that dogs can't move their lips. The dog really stuck to Mom and even slept with her after she got dementia. When the dog passed at 13, mom went to bed and refused to get up. Took mom and got a new puppy. It woke her up reversing her demetia. It was amazing. Mom remembered things much better and even started cooking again (so she could feed the dog from her plate). Mom hadn't been able to cook for 5 years! The dog came to me, woke me up, and lead me to mom when mom passed. Was not able to resuscitate her. Have now trained the dog to be my diabetic alert dog. She wakes, nudges me, and barks if my blood sugar gets below 70 and I am asleep. She is smarter than my last dog, but not as smart as my first dog. |
We've never had any big issues with fleas or ticks over the years, but when it does happen here it's only fleas.
So I just picked up these two products which I've never used before that are supposed to work pretty good. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1578781342.JPG |
I don't like putting collars and toxins on my dawgs and some of them are bad news imo...
Why not Bravecto or other from a Vet? |
Henry is a great name for that boy! I've heard Great Danes are awesome. Is he mellow at 1 year?

Kaiser, he's 10 now!

I cannot help but think he had a great life with us. We rescued him in Atlanta in 2013, and he was about 1 1/2 at the time. Great dog, and bonded immediately. He was our “I’ll never get another dog” replacement after the previous Basset hound passed. The previous one “found” my wife while she was walking. Back to Hank. Awesome dog. Well behaved and took good care of the family. He had a pretty major back surgery in January of 2018. Recovered very well (herniated discs - 2 or 3 of them). Was more or less back to his old self. A little over a week before Christmas, he had another injury - seems that this was something he was prone to. This time it was right by his rear legs, and caused him lots of pain, nearly impossible to walk, and he became incontinent. My wife had long discussions with the neurologist who did his previous surgery - and she advised that there is no recovery. Really tough decision to let him go. Don’t know if we will get another. I suspect we will - but the kids are both going to be in high school next year. Travel is much easier. ....but my wife really benefits from having a buddy around the house. I expect we will “know” by the end of summer. definitely not going to be a puppy. I know that. |
When the time is right...you'll know. You gave Hank a great life....RIP boy.
It's never easy....be well. |
Dogs always seem to find me when the time is right. Always been lucky like that, not a bad area in which to be fortunate.

NutmegCarerra, I’m sorry, I feel your pain my friend. Hank was blessed he came into your life. Amazing how quickly they become a part of you.
|
Thanks for the kind words, guys.
Despite 2 kids and a full schedule - the house is pretty quiet. |
He looked like a sweet dog, NMC.
Sorry for your loss. |
|
Sorry for your loss, NutmegCarerra.....but thanks for giving Hank a home and so much love. Thoughts are with you and yours..... :(

Puppy Condolences.
After my first dog passed, 17 years, could only go 2 months without a dog and got another. She was with us for 13 years. When she passed we went the next day and got another puppy! |
