This past weekend. Pets always look pathetic when they're stuck in an Elizabethan collar, don't they?

“Golden retrievers are not bred to be guard dogs, and considering the size of their hearts and their irrepressible joy in life, they are less likely to bite than to bark, less likely to bark than to lick a hand in greeting. In spite of their size, they think they are lap dogs, and in spite of being dogs, they think they are also human, and nearly every human they meet is judged to have the potential to be a boon companion who might, at many moment, cry, "Let's go!" and lead them on a great adventure.”

Cool, Bill - thanks for letting me know. These are words to live by if you are lucky enough to be owned by one of these faithful creatures....all the best, Baz

Aww shucks...Sophie is an exceptional dog. I can't take credit for this photo though, my sister in law took it and she is a real pro

My hack shots of the Sophie-bear (capturing her personality IMHO)

Some more nice Sophie pics Jacob...thanks!

Here's the little rescue - Billabong - in her "cone of shame".....

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...45885179_n.jpg

She actually handled it very well. She would allow me to put it on and take it off anytime without any fanfare. The vets said she was welcome back anytime....very well behaved and a sweet personality. I was (and still am) a proud dad, of course. :)

Billabong (left) on her first day at her new home with her new sis, Winkipop. Like 2 peas in a pod. ;)

And yes...eventually she grew into those ears.....

Thanks Art. I loved the pics of yer girl Daisy as well. She just looks so sweet.

Baz 06-21-2012 05:42 PM

David - I LOVE Jack's snow pic! You can tell he's a character but you also can also easily see he was such a faithful companion who was very happy to just be with you on your daily adventures wherever you went...

There's a code dogs live by - it's the code of honour. No other creature on Earth can match this devotion to their human.

I can't even put it into words....but your photo certainly did David....Jack's legacy will live on in your heart - and in ours now.

Same holds true for all furkids on this thread - I hope we continue to post dog pics, dog stories, dog philosophy, etc.....heck it's educational and therapeutic if nothing else! ;)

Dog's Prayer

You folks may know this one. It never fails to choke me up a bit:

A Dog's Prayer
Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside... for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements... and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land... for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

College prof knew I was a hunter and dog guy, turned me on to Robert Service:

Yellow
Robert Service
One pearly day of early May
I strolled upon the sand,
And saw, say half-a-mile away
A man with gun in hand;
A dog was cowering to his will,
As slow he sought to creep
Upon a dozen ducks so still
They seemed to be asleep,

When like a streak the dog dashed out,
The ducks flashed up in flight;
The fellow gave a savage shout
And cursed with all his might.
Then I stood somewhat amazed
And gazed with eyes agog,
With bitter rage his gun he raised
And blazed and shot the dog.

You know how dogs can yelp with pain;
Its blood soaked in the sand,
And yet it crawled to him again
And tried to lick his hand.
"Forgive me, Lord, for what I've done,"
It seemed as if it said,
But once again he raised his gun:
This time he shot it - dead.

What could I do? What could I say?
'Twas such a lonely place.
Tongue-tied I saw him stride away,
I never saw his face.
I should have bawled the bastard out:
A yellow dog he slew;
But worse, he proved beyond a doubt
That - I was yellow too.
