What is this car?

My neighbor from around the corner told me the owner wanted someone to look at it for him. I wanted to know what it is so I don't look like a Dumb@$$ when I go over there. Thank you in advance.

Maybe a '36- '38 Buick?

stomachmonkey 06-19-2012 03:20 PM

European 48' Ford Prefect Sedan.

sammyg2 06-19-2012 03:56 PM

I thought the '48 prefect had a one piece rear window. Maybe that was just on the saloon ......

Just kidding. I have no idea if it did or not.

Not sure either.

One of the things that throws it's age is the headlights not integrated into the fender, that was out of style by the late 40's, at least state side.

They were post war EU so a bit dated in look till manufacturing was back up to snuff.

They were manufactured in a lot of different countries around europe and Canada as well so several different versions/configurations exist.

They were also a bed for hotrods so this one may have been moded at some point.

Body shape, fenders appear correct for a Prefect.

That's my best guess.

It is RHD, the old plate says LP 1948, Neighbor says it is English. I think stomachmonkey got it! Thanks a lot. I will post on this thread in a couple of days to let you know for sure.

I didn't know Ford Prefect was a car, too. (think Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

johnco 06-19-2012 04:19 PM

my friend has an Olds that looks very similar to that with the split rear window... my 37 chevy has close to the same body style

It has some subtle differences. Bullet front turn signals and a rumble seat.

The name came from the car, a joke.

That Chevy looks pretty close, it has suicide doors, the neighbors car has reverse suicide doors.

Dan Fink Metalworks Shop Tour 1948 Ford Panel Photo 14

Look at door hinge location differences from OP's car. Slanted sheet metal accent on the side of the Anglia is missing on OP car, hood side vents...I'm thinking it's not an Anglia?

craigster59 06-19-2012 06:04 PM

Looks to me like a very early Pontiac Aztek........

recycled sixtie 06-19-2012 06:05 PM

It's not a Ford Prefect, or Anglia. It's too big for an English Ford. I should know as I was borne there. The back windows are not right either. Perhaps American with UK licence plates?

Bob Goding 06-19-2012 06:08 PM

It's a British Vauxhall--about 1946 [just postwar] maybe a 10 or 14-----
See the flutes along the bonnet[hood] edges!
Here's one .This is a 12-the numbers were common as H.P for tax purposes, nothing to do with engine power.
Not uncommon for the lesser models to not have the boot[trunk]as this one appears. 1948 they say.
Looks like your original might have 1948 as number plate.

Whatever it is, probably european, it has funny doors, the fronts look like they open to the back and the backs look like they open regular.
So, not a Buick, Chevy, Ford, or anything I can think of.
