Pretend your mom is visiting. Do you.....

.....clean the house top to bottom? My mom is coming to stay for 3 weeks. I'm scrubbing bathroom and the room she is sleeping in. Sweep vacumn done. You? My coworker took time off (2 days!) to scrub her place down. Seriously. My mom knows me. Whatever.

Leave it as is. She's going to need something to do in those 3 weeks, let her earn her keep...

This ^ seriously.

Other then a clean bathroom, kitchen and spare bedroom (including sheets) , I know I don't want my mom bored and looking for things to do-critique-discuss etc. the garden is another place she can " earn her keep" and stay busy teaching the little guy.

Seriously Cliff, I think the change of scenery and you letting your Mom do her "Mom" stuff will probably lift her a bit out of her funk. She needs to feel needed.

Yes. It is a sin if she can find real dirt. I do the kitchen. My wife does the bathrooms & we share the other areas.

I don't do "house"work. My wife does however feel the need to clean the house prior to visits from family.

That's not so bad.

My wife feels the need to clean the house prior to visits from the house cleaners.

Try and figure that one out.

I wouldn't want to come into a home that was still in "everyday" use mode. Some tidying up is called for. We will all differ on how deep the cleaning would be before a visit of Mom.

According to the Moody Blues, it's a question of balance. Yes, you get the bathroom clean (women think unclean bathrooms are unacceptably gross) and tidy up the bedroom in which she will be sleeping. I suspect that if there are cleaning/straightening chores not done upon her arrival, she will be (secretly, inwardly) pleased to notice something she can do to contribute.

Bathrooms, Kitchen, get em spotless. Refrigerator and oven/stove. All the other rooms, hide all the clutter, dust, vacuum. Tidy it up, fresh sheets, etc.
That was my routine. I could do everything on my list on a long saturday morning.
Mom still cleaned it "better" when she got to town, but I got over being miffed.

And that any food made or served in a less than 'cleaned well' kitchen is almost inedible. I say 'cleaned well' versus the 'sterilized' kitchen that some moms are capable of keeping.

A Basic clean, absolutely. Your wife may get judged too, if it is too filthy. Detail stuff like windows and blinds I'd leave if she likes to show everyone how it is done!

If we are having guests over, including family staying for a few days or more, we get everything as clean and tidy as possible. I have been known to take a day off work to get the house and property exceptionally clean and groomed when I have big parties.

We don't do anything different for my MIL visits that we don't do everyday.

Visits from Mom

My mom had this hanging in her kitchen for years...

I was surprised when my wife said she wanted it for her kitchen when we were cleaning out the house after Mom passed.
We always seem to do a special cleaning when someone from out of town comes to visit, but my in-laws live so close by that they don't really count as out-of-towners. I've come to appreciate how clean and neat my wife keeps our house, even when she's getting on me about my messy desk in the living room.
