Interesting 914 w/ 2.0

Looks like a fun little car. Really know very little about 914's, but lightweight, mid-engine and low cost is a good combination. This one is only an hour away, but thought I'd tee it up to the braintrust for preliminary thoughts. You guys tend to see things from a thousand miles away that I'd miss standing next to it! Pro-tec has a good rep, although I've never used them...

Porsche 914

Owned a '74 2.0 for many years... great fun...

No engine shots - could be problematic.

I see 2 main differences between the 914 & the 911.

The 914's entry cost is lower.
The 914's T-4 motor (3 main brgs....a clue there) is garbage.

There are a bunch more pluses & minuses but these 2, in my mind, cover it.

Looks like a nice car. Call and ask about the engine and the rust in the battery tray & longs. Seller knows enough about the cars to know he needs pictures and info about that stuff.

Just spoke with him. Nice enough guy but heard enough to be concerned. Most of the work was done with used parts. Engine and trans were sourced from a local guy upgrading another car....removed from one car and bolted into this one, leaks "two drops a day", etc. He said if he keeps it he'll drop engine and send it off for a "refresh" and clean up the engine bay. Said he doesn't "think" there's much rust and relied on the shop rather than his own eyes. Too shaky for me to feel comfortable. Going to pass.

Even if your going to pass on it, it might be worth going to look at. It's only a hour away. You can look at the areas of concern with 914's and learn about them.

Areas to look at: Rear trunk near the tail lights. Water collects in this area if they have bad seals and causes rust. Longs: Just don't look at the passenger side under the battery, look at the drivers side too. The "Hell Hole" under the battery. Very problematic in 914s that haven't been cared for.

car and the parts for 6500? Run and get this car checked out at a decent shop. That is a very good price if it passes the ppi

Nice looking car. A few things wrong with it (No 1.7 badge in '72, passenger seat updated to 1973-76 type) but otherwise, if no rust, could be a great buy.

Seems like a good deal! Located in a good salt-free state. get a good PPI from a 914 specialist it will be money well spent. ( Even if you don't buy the car)

I'd pass. The steering wheel is installed upside down.

You'd be hard pressed to spend less than $6500 bringing a thrasher to that level of restoration.

I would be VERY surprised if a car with that nice of exterior/interior would have 'deal breaking' rust.

Don't let the oil leak bother you.
The most fantastic Porsche race cars nearly all leak oil. ( it's a rule )

Go look and make an offer.

100% agreed. Nice 914s are starting to bring real money. If rust isn't an issue I would be all over it.

yep, agreed. It really looks like a pretty good car for $6500. You can't buy a ratty 914 and make it that nice for $6500. I've tried.

Hey K Trekkor I still have your wheels. SW 3 piece basket-weave, sweet wheels.
Apparently Chris' assistant was admiring them the other day.

i dont know the prices, but i did have a 73 that i put a 2.2e motor in.
my right rear suspension piece did break and i did have to have the rear half of the floor pan replaced. not a big deal. dont remember the cost but it was back in the 90's.
good thing, its got the fuchs wheels and it has a 2.0. the big thing is the heads. you can easily change the bolt pattern to 5 lug and pick up some 911 fuchs.

as mentioned above, the rear trunk by the tail lights especially since the trunk looks like it has undercoating on it. it should be paint.

check the deck lid hinges. not a big deal but they do break.

fun cars! personally, i think they are more fun than a 911. mine was like driving a go cart.

Call the shop that he mentions and ask about it. If you like red and it all checks out then it's probably a good car for you

It is probably worth asking fellow forum member billh1963 about it. I think he is in that area. If he is then he probably knows the car.
