Help with new acoustic guitar choice
Calling the guitar gurus...
Well the GAS has hit me again and I'm looking to upgrade my acoustic. I've decided on a Grand Auditorium shape and have narrowed my choices down to Martin, Taylor or Eastman. Budget is around $1200 before trade in. For that price I am looking at a Martin GPCPA4, an Eastman AC522CE, or a Taylor 214. At this point the Taylor comes in last due to laminate woods. Eastman has the nicest appointments because it's Chinese made. Martin has a slight edge on tone from what I hear on YouTube. Opinions? |

The purists will throw rocks at me for this but I really like the ovation round back I had many years ago.

I have a Taylor 814ce and love it. I played quite a few guitars before I picked this one up and this one was perfect for me. Great tone and beautiful craftsmanship.
After watching that video, I have even more respect for Bob Taylor.

From what I hear, laminates are less effected by changes in humidity and temperature.

My son has a Taylor Big Baby and it's simply a fantastic guitar and was reasonably priced. We have tried Taylors and other brands at various stores and it's either Taylor or Martin for us. Our guitarists at two churches we've played in the worships bands in have hated their Ovations, but the Takamine gets good grades...

Knowing what I know about Larrivee, I can't support them.
They burned a friend of mine for about $30,000 worth of his products. I don't know the finer details, but something about reverse engineering and then returning... Recently, they wanted to order a bunch of nickel silver P-90 pickup covers from me, without holes. My supplier made them at considerable cost, and they've not come through with the order.

Have you considered the Esteban line of guitars?

I've tried Larrivee and Guild, didn't really dig either of them.
I like the Taylor's but they are pricey. I'm hoping to play some at a guitar shop tomorrow. |

If more stories like the one Bob Taylor tells on that video were shown to the masses, the world would be a better place. Yeah, he sounds a little like Mr Rogers but he's just telling people that this is the problem, here's my solution. He's offering benefits to the free enterprise system and the environmentalists simultaneously.

I think I could have listened to Bob Taylor all day long. Very easy to listen to. My wife has a Taylor and it is a really nice guitar. I learned to play on my Cort that has a solid spruce top and cost less than $300 back when I bought it in the late 90's. I wouldn't give it up for any guitar really. I don't need any expensive big brand guitars to enjoy making music.

Like Eric says, buy used, there are some screaming deals out there and $1200 will get you a lot of guitar. I've bought and sold a few guitars on this guitar forum, a bunch of straight up guys.
Here's a nice Taylor in your range and there's also a Martin OM-21 for $1300 on there... FS: 2011 Taylor 414ce - The Acoustic Guitar Forum
