Excellent points. I've been to Hoboken a few times and liked it a lot.
Going to start searching in earnest in September. Quote:

I lived out on the North Shore, Nassau/Suffolk border, I could see Connecticut from my house and get across LI Sound by boat in under 15 minutes. To reach the same place on the CT side by car was a 2 hour drive. If they ran a bridge over or a tunnel under LI Sound I'd happily have paid $20 each way to use it.

Enough rationalization.
This place BREATHES, man, it's ALIVE, humming at every hour from corner to corner, vibrating with an edge, a tangible intensity so razor sharp and insane that you NEVER want to put it down. It's all here, from the greatest triumphs of Capitalism to an intensity of human suffering that will rip your lungs out. 400 years of aspiration and energy on this rock, ghosts everywhere if you know how to spot them. Just when you think you have it figured out the wind blows and everything you liked or hated has changed. No place like it on earth, thanks be to G_d. Shaun feels it. There will be no changing his mind.

That nails it John. When I get on the Henry Hudson, I can feel it all over, or what James May might be feeling at times.
![]() Same feeling scrolling through this. New York in Black and White Sometimes I wish I had stayed at Credit Suisse or salomon brothers smith barney back in 1999. Will be on Pier 94 August 4-7 for our biggest SP13 show right after shipping Fall 12. So it's all riding on this season shipping well and Spring 13 Sampling. The next 30 days could prove the most important in my life.

So it does not smell like a garbage dump above ground and urine below ground in the subways like it did in the late 80's early 90's?

Does farm country in (insert the name of city state county) smell like manure?
Are there any machines that resemble this one in your vicinity? Manure Spreader I always enjoy my time at my Vermont house when the farmers are spreading the ****.... My cousins place in rural Mass.... dairy farms on three sides...... eau de manure when the farmers make the cows give back such that they get a good crop of hay to feed on next season... FWIW I don't live in NYC I just visit there every day

If you're thinking of moving back to NY, check out Astoria Queens. I've lived here 7yrs. More affordable than BK, fewer hipsters, better food and a great park. I'm at the Ditmars stop (last on Q, N line) and it takes me 30 mins door to door to get to my office in Times Sq.

That said.... it sounds like maybe it is a bit cleaner now in 2012? Doesn't really matter as I have no reason to go back and would rather spend precious vacation time in the mountains/secluded spots away from the hustle/bustle of city life. Different strokes and all that I guess.

Moving to NYC?
Hey Shaun,
I just noticed this post today, so moving to NYC!! WOW, THAT'S A BIG STEP! As everyone has pointed out there are plenty of reasons to be outside the city, but seems like one of the MAJOR reasons you are moving is to get back into a groove again. So adding my 2cents, think Brooklyn is probably a good place to start, so stay the course! If you need space take a look around the Red Hook area. There isn't much in the way of public trans except the bus so a car would be a benefit. Plus, some nice old industrial/commercial buildings you could probably work/live in as well. Not sure legally, but might be a while before anyone ever caught up to you. A lot going on there! Have to meet for a beer sometime. I'm in the city frequently on biz and have family in Williamsburg section. Went to college in BedSty section years ago and that pretty much cured me of ever wanting to live in the city again, but I can see the draw! Tons of 'ENERGY' and the scenery is pretty awesome, wink wink! Keep us posted!

Guys, you should see Bed Sty today, you would not recognize it! I go through it every day to and from work. The hipster/midwest young people who can't afford Greenpoint/Williamsburg are moving in. I like to call them pioneers.
Beer in Williamsburg at Radegast, Brooklyn Brewery, Spritzenhaus (around the corner from my shop)!!!!! OK, when, I'm in, please, please, please!!!

Astoria is morphing also.... and there has been a Czech Beer Garden that has been in operation for 101 years in Astoria....
Beer Garden Steinway St in Astoria has some amazing restaurants...heck you can toss a ping pong ball and hit a great restaurant in anywhere in NYC

I honestly haven't been back to Bed-sty since I graduated back in the 70s. It could only have gone up from there believe me! I recall burned out blocks, murders & drug dealers on the corners; muggings, tanks on corners, 5 cops to a squad car. Wonder I made it out alive now that I think about it. But damn, at the end of the day you sure felt alive or was that just panic?
I still miss the Myrtle Ave EL; gezz what a trip! Was around when they tore it down. The Mansions of Washington Ave off DeKalb I understand look absolutely gorgeous now. Had a few Architectural student friends that bought a few back then. Wonder if they have broken even yet!? Sorry for the memory lane! Shaun, I still say stay the course, go with Brooklyn! I think you'll still be able to be stimulated beyond your wildest dreams!
