Another texting casualty?

Rick V 07-07-2012 01:30 AM

And he is off with pay? There is no way he was paying attention to driving, nor a mechanical failure. he made no attempt to get out of that bad situation. A medical issue is the only excuse I would buy here that doesn't warrant something bad happening to him

kach22i 07-07-2012 04:23 AM

When I see people flying up my my rear end I always get nervous, more so in the 911. This scene will not make me more comfortable.

I bet he/she was text messaging at the time.

BlueSkyJaunte 07-07-2012 06:14 AM

This is why I always have an itchy feeling between my shoulder blades when I ride the bike...and my eyes on the mirrors and in gear when stopped.

A930Rocket 07-07-2012 06:20 AM

No brakes at all. Scary.

stomachmonkey 07-07-2012 06:24 AM

Texas. Happened just south of us.

The cell phone usage while driving around here is out of control.

Much as I hate additional regulation a ban is seriously needed here.

widebody911 07-07-2012 06:42 AM

There was an incident like like several years ago her on Hwy 80; a school bus went right over the top of a two or three cars, killing a copuple people.

I think the paid leave means he'll be fired. They just want to make they go by the book so the firing process goes smoothly.

Due process.....So he/she doesn't sue for millions and get their job back 3 yrs from now......Labor law and all of that ......

Baz 07-07-2012 12:01 PM

The hypocrisy of it all.......

Mandatory seatbelt laws but you can talk/text/surf the net on the cell phone all you want.

What?

Yes...that's what voice mail is for dummies!

Driving while on a phone needs to be treated exactly the same as a DUI.

Tobra 07-07-2012 07:44 PM

I am surprised they suspended with pay, Texas is an at will work state, wonder if they were union.

I remember that one. My sister got hit in almost the same spot a year later, but traffic was backed up on the Eastbound lanes, rather than the ramp, fortunately there was nobody in the back seat, because the license plate ended up kissing the front seats.

Stuff like that is why I stop short when traffic stops, leave an "out" and watch my mirrors. If I pull up behind someone on a scoot, I will point the car to one side, so if I get hit from behind they have a chance to not be killed.

LeeH 07-07-2012 08:54 PM

Amazing there were no serious injuries. Nice response by the two drivers in the #1 & #2 lanes.

Heel n Toe 07-07-2012 10:26 PM

I just watched it again because of A930Rocket saying no brakes at all... wanted to look for brake lights... even with it pulled out to full screen, I can barely tell either way... looks like they come on 1/4 second before the hit...

...but...

...look at the van's left rear light cluster... it blows outward on impact... doesn't make sense.

Heel n Toe 07-07-2012 10:34 PM

Air pressure, maybe?

Looks bad for the vehicle that the van hit... (see the end of this video)...

No one badly hurt. I guess airbags and all that safety stuff really do work. I would have thought the occupants of that first car would have looked like do sausage.

widgeon13 07-08-2012 02:58 AM

Looks like he thought he was in a travel lane, not an exit lane. Still no excuse for that kind of accident. Amazing no one seriously hurt.

pavulon 07-08-2012 07:18 AM

Along these lines...why are buses (coach, school, shuttle...) not required to have seat belts?

Noney 07-08-2012 07:58 AM

Check out the black car next to the truck as it impacts the stopped cars. Is that a Lambo? If so, I'll bet the driver was checking it out and not looking forward.

They were not required to originally have them as they were considered cumbersome and unnecessary due to the construction of the vehicle. That has been re-thought to say the least... The problem now is that you either have a complying seatbelt or you leave it as is... To change the construction, say of uni-body tour bus to accept seatbelts and to test for them is according to the manufacturers prohibitively expensive. The stress load on the floor of the bus to accommodate 55 passengers in an accident (through seatbelts attached ultimately to the floor) is huge.

Every couple of years, proposed legislation appears tha requires it. The requirements keep getting shot down entirely or postponed. Eventually, they will have them nationwide. But right now, when you do see them, it is probably a local or state requirement.
