Plastic gas can

Anybody see the Dan Rather report on Blitz gas cans last night? My wife and I watched a report on HIV in Henderson NC, and after that came the report on the gas cans.

Dan Rather Reports – AXS TV

Some of the people were burnt very badly and there was a father who was charged with killing his child. Come to find out gasoline is highly flammable especially if you pour it over and open flame.

I guess I am a little shocked about how careless people are with gasoline.

I had heard that because of all the lawsuits, which would ruin the company, Blitz is closing its doors.

Someone will have to provide the 25 words or less version, I'm not listening to ten minutes of Dan Rather.

If you pour gas on an open flame with a blitz gas can it can blow up.

And even there they will swell in the summer heat. You always have to leave a tiny vent open on a plastic container. But that said, people are idiots.

The moving of a fluid creates a static charge. Light hydrocarbons tend to be more efficient at creating that charge.

Pouring gasoline into or out of a plastic can WITHOUT ANY TYPE OF GROUNDING DEVICE TO CARRY THE CHARGE AWAY can result in a spark which can ignite the vapors.

That's why you are not suppose to fill any can with gas in the back of a pick-up if you have a bed liner.

The safest way to handle gasoline containers is to have a reasonably long wire with large aligator clips on both ends. Clip one end to the can, the other to a ground, and pour away knowing you will not burst into flames.

A couple bux at the local ace hardware could save your life.

I'll say this; lawyers will always be suing for idiots.

Sure, the gas-can could be designed to make it more idiot-proof. ...but then the lawyer just find a better idiot.

...some idiot will set a gas-can on an open flame (near a kid) and some lawyer will shortly there after be saying "if only the gas-can had ceramic space-shuttle tiles...."

omg.

I'm pretty sure every paint/gas ..etc...etc... container says keep away from ignition sources, INCLUDING HOT WATER TANKS/FURNACES. If it didn't have a label like that on it, that's even less then $1

You can't teach common sense tho.

You always get these 'shows' to chastise and ruin Companies.
-Who out there on TV will chastise the parents for their stupidity.
-There is none.

A friend of mine was filling his car when a kid came over and told him "that stuff isn't flammable" as he lit a lighter at the filler neck. The kid ended up with severe burns for his trouble and the gas station owner was yelling at my friend for discharging the gas station fire extinguisher. That station is no onger in business. At least my friend had the presence of mind to pull the nozzle, close the fuel door flap, hit the emergency shut off and grab a fire extinguisher and put the fire out (including the kid). I guess the kid shoulda sued someone.

Fascinating! That is simply amazing how something as simple as a screen can arrest the flame and prevent an explosion. Now that I think about it, I remember a 5-gallon Gerry can when I was a kid had that screen (the simple one) at the opening. I always wondered what it was for. Now I know. Come to think of it, why are those screens not used for example at the gas pump or at the gas cap of a car? Perhaps it is too fill rate restrictive when filling?

When we started the enduro races for POC out here, one of the first requirements for fueling was to have a ground wire from the containers to the cars. You would not believe the flak we got from "experts" on how plastic containers were non conductive; they missed the point .
Luckily we prevailed and its been a requirement for ALL race fueling ever since
