Douglasville or Powder Springs GA questions
Hi, all.
Looks like we're locating. First time for either of us (Wife, me, 2 kids). We're making sort of a big change. Leaving WI (lived here all our lives) to pursue a career improvement. My new gig will land me more or less in between these two towns - and they seem to look pretty good based on what I've seen on line. Priority #1: Good schools. Kids are in grade school now. Priority #2: Near work - again, in between these towns. Priority #3 and beyond: Quality of life, nice home, nice neighborhood (with kids, etc...) and not too far from work. Thanks for any insight.

Powder Springs- still part of suburban Atlanta -close to highly desired Vinings- Smyrna area -Award winning Cobb County School System - highly developed while Douglasville is a more rural area further outside the Perimeter.

Good info. Thanks.
Anything to watch out for or avoid? Any other specific areas (we'll look at Smyrna, too). |

Not sure about Smyrna now but everyone I know who lived there 3-4 years back moved further north; most live in Marietta, Woodstock, or Canton now.
edit: You know there's a serious shortage of frozen custard down here, right?

Scott-
Yes, I'm sure the custard count is low - but what really bothers me is the lack of bratwurst. For any of you who don't know - you need to visit WI in the summertime. My current home has a "Brat fry" on any given street corner every weekend. ...I'll probably lose a few pounds! |

OK, folks.
Here I am 1 week in, and looking at houses. Wifey will be coming down next week, and we'll hit the realty scene for a couple of days. I have a couple of places that look good, and am hoping that the stars align (and that we can get our old place sold quickly). It's looking like the Cobb Co. area is the hot ticket. Most likely west and a little south of Lost Mountain / Kennesaw area. Douglasville is pretty much out. Wish me luck! |

Marietta/Cobb County........
If you can find a place in Marietta on Whitlock Avenue on west side of town, that is the current "in" place to live. The new Marietta High School is in that area and is only a few years old. I heard that about $80 million was spent on it! Also, lots of shops and restaurants in the area. If you buy in the county, there are probably 15 or more county high schools (with new ones being added all the time). If you need a realtor, I have a friend that works for the Harry Norman Realty office in that area. She is very capable and honest. Let me know if you would like the name and I will send you a PM. There is a section of Whitlock Avenue going towards Marietta that is only 2 lanes and traffic there can be a pain. Other than that, no probs that I am aware of. Good luck!

I moved to Marietta about two years ago so West Cobb. The wife and I love the area and we're 10 minutes from Patek meats...........great place but VERY busy. I hear the schools are good ( our kids all grown up ). Good luck in your search.

Back in the 80s, when I was up there, we lived near Buckhead, and I had friends in Powder Springs, use to race there too (BMX) Not sure what either area is like these days though. I had a lot of fun, but it was just too far away from the ocean for me..

Thanks, folks!
Heading down on Monday to check out some more houses. Right now, it's looking like the area between Kennesaw, Marietta and Powder Springs. My wife has found the highly rated schools, and we're focusing on those. Will keep the community here updated of results. In the meantime, if someone needs a place near Road America - I have a nice place to sell. Decent (oversized) 3-car garage with high ceilings, hot & cold hose spigot and floor drains. PM me for pics of the garage. (Or house)

Update:
Had good offers (yes, multiple) on the house. Accepted one - and waiting to close at end of Aug. New place being built - an existing but relatively new subdivision in Powder Springs - actually the address is in Hiram. Little farther west than I wanted - but seemed best mix of school, neighborhood, builder, etc... In the meantime - will be driving down to my interim apartment. This is a long process, but we're looking forward to finally "getting there". rfuerst911sc - i'll be in touch sometime once I'm down there. So far, havent had to minutes to rub together.... |
