If you've seen this fountain in Munich...

...and you know what that equestrian statue represents, please let me know.

I'm trying to find out for a friend. She says it looks like some sort of sport involving a football... and it does... but it probably isn't.

I am certain that the Pelican Braintrust will eventually solve this mystery.

Wittelbacher Brunnen

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wittelsbacherbrunnen_(Lenbachplatz)

The statue is a "Allegorie of Destruction"

Heh heh. Thanks... Munich Info - Wittelsbacher Brunnen [en]

The fountain "Wittelsbacher Brunnen" was built in 1893 - 1895 by Adolf Hildebrand and is one of the most splendid classicistic monumental fountains in Munich. This masterpiece has been constructed to mark the completion of the Munich drinking water management from the river Mangfall and the connection of the residence of the Wittelsbacher to the municipal water supply.

The stone-flinging male figure on the left mythical creature symbolises the destructive strength of the water, while the female figure with bowl of white marble on the right side is a sign for the positive power of the water.

This symbolizes the ancient art of equestrian foot bathing. The ancient Germanic tribes, bolstered by stories of the Christian Messiah washing peoples feet, also felt that their equestrian companions were worthy of entry into the promised land and assumed that foot bathing was part of that contract... ...and in a fete of German stubborness and a bit of niavete built a fountain capable of automatically washing the horses feet.

Said Hans Bowlenschwiger the lead engineer "While ve admire this Jesus for washink da feet mit his hair, vat with horse poop and all 'zat, ve vanted sumting automatiche.'

The rider has brought his horse to the fountain for a washing and is guiding him through. That is not a stone, but a natural pumice lump used to get out 'ze stubborn stains.'
