My daughter took up rowing~!

Our 15 year old daughter decided that she wants to be on her school's rowing team and she's here practicing (middle girl in furthest row away). I don't know anything about rowing and never saw these training devices, which are pretty cool!

Anyone else here have a son or daughter who rows?

I never saw those either. I was on the high school rowing team a life time ago..or so it seems...1960. We had finely crafted wooden shells then from some company in Olympia, Washington, as I recall. They were very delicate...maybe 1/4" thick. Rowing is perhaps the most physically grueling sport I could imagine at the time. We raced only a mile...only? I think college is a lot longer. You are all out in those races, legs, arms, shoulders, belly, etc. Never been so exhausted but it sure gets you in shape ! Good for her !

Very cool! I've never seen a trainer like that.

I took a learn to row class with our local club. By then end I had been in an 8, 4, and a double. Very fun, and a great workout.

I would love to get an erg (rowing machine) for the house, but they are pretty expensive. Even better would be to get our own shell, but with the length of the season here, it doesn't make sense.

Art, there is no other sport like rowing. it is the quintessential team sport.
there are no stars in rowing and each rower must be in peak physical and mental condition, master technique, and all athletes in the boat must work in perfect unison to win. Every stroke you must have the grace and agility of a ballerina combined with the power of a weightlifter, on the first stroke, and the last 50 where your entire body tells you to stop.

when rowing in unison under power, the boat runs, gliding almost effortlessly on the water, gaining momentum and speed with every stroke. there's no other feeling like it, like the boat is getting away from you.

boats, when they are set, form a family bond. I could go on forever.

the best years of my life I was coaching Brandeis Crew. if I could do it all over again, I'd coach in the mornings and afternoons and restore 911s during the day. Maybe when I retire.

Erg tanks. My friends who rowed hated them (for the boredom). But it's what you do to train indoors.

My wife rowed in college, but hasn't done so since then.

I like rowing as an exercise, but it bothers my weak shoulder. I have a Tunturi rowing machine I picked up at a garage sale. The seller was really bummed as he was moving out of town the next day, but couldn't take the machine. He said he paid $1200... I bought it for $30!

Seems like a very expensive facility for HS rowing. Is is a private school? I'm not trying to set anyone off but where does the money come for a facility dedicated just too rowing? What's wrong with less expensive mechanical machines.

I suppose it could also be a local college / university facility.

Good for your daughter, rowing is great full body conditioning sport. I have a good friend who was the cocks-man (guy in the back yelling) at Dartmouth. He just had to keep his weight down.

Thanks for the input, guys! This facility is home to many rowing clubs and Wyandotte High School is the 3rd oldest rowing club in the US and the oldest in MI. Becky loves it and doesn't mid the "o-dark-thirty" practice sessions and training after school every day. She is also taking cello lessons and dances, so she's busy, which is good for a teenager, I believe. As long as she keeps her grades up, she can participate in these activities. She just put in her application for the National Honor Society, so we're very proud of her. Her Golden Retriever Daisy really misses her being home, though...

When my youngest son started his 4 yrs by the bay, he never rowed a day in his life but he always did leg sports, cc, track and alpine skiing. By the end of his plebe yr he was ranked 2nd in his class in rowing which is impressive since the first boat is all recruited, good legs and lungs are the key.

Going into the second yr, he strained his patellar tendon and rowing was over that fast, the risk of permanent injury outweighted the reward.

The rewards the team would get by winning a race would be the jerseys of the team they beat, he has a collection from harvard, yale, princeton.

The position in the boat has great importance and terms like crabbing will be in your vocabulary.

As they say from parents of children, the more they do the less they have time for trouble. You have but one chance in your life to be great in a sport, don't waste the opportunity because it will be over before you know it. You never want to say, "I wish I woulda, coulda, shoulda".

Rowing doesn't tolerate slackers. It is obvious very quickly.

Our daughter seems to really enjoy it. Wen she takes something on, like piano, dancing, cello, etc... she never gives up and she sticks with it!
