Where did all the Carrera GTs go ?

Up until maybe a year or 2 ago, I would see a Carrera GT on the Freeway or on one of the local canyon roads every couple of weeks or so. I havent seen one on the road in a good long while now. Have they all become garage queens already ?

dentist90 07-28-2012 06:58 PM

Lucky you. Only place I have ever seen one is on YouTube... and it wasn't complimentary to the Porsche marque.

Porsche-O-Phile 07-28-2012 07:16 PM

I used to see a few driving around but similarly haven't in quite a while. I suspect most have either been relegated to garage queen status or crashed by now.

Apparently so.

mikeesik 07-28-2012 07:35 PM

Weird!
Why today my Son and I went to the Porsche dealership.
-There was a CGT parked outside for all to salivate on .
It was in for maintenance . Talked to a shaguar sales guy.
Never seen one before and thought it'd be a bit bigger.
-Nice, though. Small cabin nice rear sighting. Shame Porsche doesn't focus on engine details. Cheaper I guess. That goes along with all the rear engines.

Noah930 07-28-2012 07:38 PM

Parked next to one at the last Supercar Sunday I attended. But I don't see them on the street too often anymore.

This is the video I was thinking of. And don't get me wrong... I would give my left one to own one of these. Just wouldn't use it as an auditory weapon on the street. Maybe. :p

Roger that. Sounds good on the canyon road and in the tunnel (looked like Kanan Road to me) . But that display on the streets around Beverly Hills....not so good. Must be "new money". But I admit, if I could afford a Carrera GT..it would be hard to hold back. :D

No it wouldn't. Because you're not an a**hole.

Brew 66 07-28-2012 07:59 PM

Most are garaged due to the cost of a tune up!
Soneone was driving Jerry Seinfeld's at Cars and Coffee in Irvine a couple of weeks back!

I try not to be one. But ...who knows? ME behind the wheel of a Carrera GT ?? I might go bad !

AFC-911 07-28-2012 08:37 PM

The guy that killed himself in one of those top speed road races in Nevada or something?

CHICKS 07-28-2012 09:32 PM

Carrera GT's are ugly. Period.

DanielDudley 07-29-2012 03:03 AM

Even the great Walter Rohrl admits now that he could have been faster at the 'Ring in a CGT if they were more forgiving. Sad really to see another super expensive Porsche flagship with insufficient development.

onewhippedpuppy 07-29-2012 03:22 AM

There's one that I occasionally see driving around town, and another that I saw at my dealer service department when the buyer of my last 996 was getting a PPI. They didn't even put it in the same service area with the "common" Porsches, it was totally segregated. Wichita isn't supercar city, but I see far more new Ferraris and Lambos here than CGTs.

I think they're appreciating in value, correct? Probably a lot of folks just sitting on them to keep the miles low. It's a damn shame........

slow&rusty 07-29-2012 05:31 AM

I keep mine garaged most of the year but will take it out to Cars and Coffee occasionally.

motion 07-29-2012 05:35 AM

I'm saving up for one.... glorious car.

Would you, be kind enough to tell me if the black C2 turbo on your lot is as nice underneath/overall as the shiny sides appears in images??

Motion, might want to change your profile pic;)

porsche4life 07-29-2012 09:35 AM

I chased one through the hills of western Arkansas last year... It's my understanding that the owner drives it quite a bit...

They are ugly in the sense that a first year Boxster is ugly. IOW, they are well beyond current style. If you look at how the Boxster has evolved and consider what may have been the equivalent development of the CGT, it might be the preeminent super car today.

Porsche AG just threw the car away. I can't respect that.

However, I guess the 918 is the replacement:
http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/au...ndering-01.jpg

Anyone buy one of those recently? ;) :D

Flieger 07-29-2012 10:19 AM

I think they look way better than a gen 1 Boxster. The rear is a little odd and I don't generally like Targas but the front is great and the carbon monocoque makes up for the targa top. The side view is good too.

I think you missed my point when I made a comparison to design evolution, not to the design itself.

I've never thought of the CGT as a good looking car.

It is a effective looking car though.

Not that I'll ever own one. So it does not matter.

There was a SY CGT that came up from Dallas last year for Porsche Palooza in Eureka Springs. Over 200 Porsches were flying all around NW Arkansas!

That brings a question to mind. Anyone know what a major service for a Carrera GT costs ? WAY more than I could afford I am sure. I coulnt even afford the DMV license fees and insurance. Just wondering what a service costs for a CGT.

herr_oberst 07-29-2012 08:10 PM

I don't know what a tuneup costs, but I have at the ready this fun fact -

The fuel filter is inside the fuel cell, the engine/rear suspension needs to come off of the monocoque to remove the fuel cell, (mid engine, remember), and IIRC, you cannot just buy a fuel filter, you need to go ahead and order the whole cell. But luckily, Genuine Porsche Replacement parts and labor have always been priced reasonably!

daepp 07-29-2012 08:22 PM

Sorry - not ugly. Have you seen one in person?

Living in so cal I see one every couple of months. Last one was on the 57 south. Plus, my fellow porschephiles and I all trade iphone shots of the ones we see.

Ah. Well ... I guess you could do some of the "while you are in there " things once you get the motor and rear suspension and fuel cell out of the way. So, thats good :D

It lives in Tulsa. The owner is a friend of mine and he drives it all the time. There was another silver one sold to a guy in Arkansas when they first came out but I don't know if it's still there. There's another one in Wichita.
