There are no squares. Those are just illuminated pixels on a computer screen used to represent many instances of the Form of a square: a nonphysical, 2 dimensional object with exactly four perfectly equal, perfectly straight sides.

I got 40. That graphic takes too long for me to sit there and find the answer. Someone just tell me.

You are correct. Trekkor took too much antihistamine.

The question should be worded: "How many squares can you make using selected pieces of this arrangement of lines?"
If you cannot have any parts of the arrangement of lines within a square then you are correct, of course.

I see 40 as in:

1 = 4x4 squares
4 = 3x3 squares
9 = 2x2 squares
18 = 1x1 squares
8 = 1/4 x 1/4 squares

total = 40

maybe I'm just too square to allow polygons inside my squares
