why would one NEED a big knife?
 

these two have LOOOONG blades..why?

survival? i figured you could cut a tree down with one of these and a rock as a hammer. now we all know, i love knives..i think these both look cool, but why? maybe i dont get it..maybe i just need an excuse to buy a custom bowie knife..hahah. educate me please.

That's what I would think survival... depending on what type of steel they were made of and how they were heat treated....

well, it's unlikely that I'll ever need one in the city. If I did need one that big in the city, I probably have some pretty big problems. But I can see how you might want/need one of those if you were way out in the wilderness.

I really like the one that does not have the lanyard hole, simple and elegant with a nice profile.

Short of being Tarzan of The Apes or a Roman legionnaire, I doubt an outdoorsman really needs a short sword.

Also agree. When backpacking I always pack my custom built Leatherman (has a 9" blade :)).

that custom bowie is $500..which means..it aint gonna happen.

i was once shown how to chop down a tree with a big knife..it was brutal on the tool. involved a rock.

that knife competition where they just hack thru things..amazing tools. all the pro knife builders show up..

anyone know what i am talking about? just seen it once..

I have had a few knives in the field and I always come back to my locking blade swiss army knife with a 3.25" long blade. I can cut up any animal in North America with it. It has a saw that is handy if you have a small enough animal you may want to break the hip open to clean it out. It also has a tooth pick, in case any of the freshly cooked meat gets stuck! ;) I know it is dorky and other hunters sometimes laugh at me - until I start wielding it and cut up an animal in record time. Then they stop laughing ... the steel is very good and holds a very good edge.

So, thinking out loud - you're on your own in the bush - seems you'd need a saw rather than a big-ass knife. Lots easier to cut wood with a saw than with a knife. Granted, a saw doesn't look as cool as a Crocodile Dundee knife.

You CAN use a knife to take down trees, chop wood, etc.

You can NOT use a saw to skin an animal or sharpen a spear.

Look up "bushcraft".

Anyway, Jerid makes solid knives. So do a lot of other custom knifemakers. Don't hesitate to shop around and ask folks' opinions. Warning: knives tend to multiply when you leave them near each other. ;)

How true that is. I have two knives that I carry, one is a boot knife and the other is a very utilitarian folding knife, and yet I seem to have knives everywhere I look including that ammo box full of knives in the bottom of the gun safe.:eek:

Thats true for most cases but you may have had an axe with you as well, I don't backpack or camp as my job involves this on a daily basis and my knife or choice is a 2 foot Cutlass, similar to a machette but the blade has a curve near the end for a bigger sweet spot, they are a handy tool in the jungle, light, sharp and strong, great for killing snakes.
