That's what I would think survival... depending on what type of steel they were made of and how they were heat treated....

Serious question: when does a knife become defined as a sword...or a machete?

well, it's unlikely that I'll ever need one in the city. If I did need one that big in the city, I probably have some pretty big problems. But I can see how you might want/need one of those if you were way out in the wilderness.

I really like the one that does not have the lanyard hole, simple and elegant with a nice profile.

Steve.... You haven't been in the pinemont/hempstead area have you? I may need one that big if I get out anywhere other than my office... And none of us will go in alone after dark...

Left my car over night, the grille got stolen off it...

Short of being Tarzan of The Apes or a Roman legionnaire, I doubt an outdoorsman really needs a short sword.

I have had a few knives in the field and I always come back to my locking blade swiss army knife with a 3.25" long blade. I can cut up any animal in North America with it. It has a saw that is handy if you have a small enough animal you may want to break the hip open to clean it out. It also has a tooth pick, in case any of the freshly cooked meat gets stuck! I know it is dorky and other hunters sometimes laugh at me - until I start wielding it and cut up an animal in record time. Then they stop laughing ... the steel is very good and holds a very good edge.
