"Made with real fruit!"

Just popped open a bag of fruit snacks and it struck me....

How pathetic is it that we live in a world of processed, chemically enhanced, biologically manipulated food that Marketing agencies have to actually say "Made with real fruit"? What other kind of "fruit" is there?

Just imagine the fruit snacks that are not "made with real fruit" and this is the ***** parents give their toddlers to shut them up. No wonder there are allergies, Aspergers, etc.

Waiting for "fruit substitute."

Define "real" ;)

I was running around the other day and didn't have time to eat so I grabbed a Slim Jim. Took one bite and looked at the ingredients. "Mechanically separated chicken". Hmmm, that's the last Slim Jim I'll eat...

WARNING: PRODUCT MAY CONTAIN FRUIT

FDA says:
Provided the information given is truthful and not misleading, a food may bear a claim about the presence of an ingredient perceived to add value, such as "made with real fruit".

I could not find any requirement for the amount of fruit that the product must contain. However it looks like General Mills will soon find out:
Fruit Roll-Ups Lawsuit Over 'Real Fruit' Claims Goes Forward

Does it also mention it's made with partially hydrogenated high fructose corn syrup?

My daughter asked if she could buy a box of snack bars at the store. I told her she could, as long as there was no high fructose corn syrup or partially hydrogenated oils on the ingredient list. Fail. She picked up some Pop Tarts. Same answer. After the third or fourth attempt she quit asking.

When it says "made with real fruit" that means the fruit in it is real. Maybe there's just a smidgen there and the rest is hydrogenated motor home tires but hey - the fruit is REAL!

Another one that cracks me up is the new "gluten free" marketing. I was in a store and saw uncooked beef marked as "gluten free." I mean really - what the heck did you THINK it was made out of?

It's more than marketing. People with Celiac disease literally double over in pain if they ingest something with gluten. Some of the hyper sensitive one's can't tolerate meat that was grain fed (gluten), because the Omega6/Omega3 ratio is off in the beef, which cause inflammation and ultimately could trigger symptoms and great pain. Therefore, they must have grass fed (gluten free)...which is nearly perfect in Omega6/Omega3 balance.

FWIW, grass fed beef tend to be healthier..and usually more expensive.

We don't eat that ****. You don't have to either. Its a choice.

If thats the 'world you live in', then choose a different world.

This is one of my hobby horses.

You are what you eat.

If only everyone ate healthier food and ficked a lot more - this world would be a much better place.

You do know that it's irrelevant whether it has that "made with real fruit" tag on it or not....your still eating crap.

Yep. And "Gluten Free" conventionally means processed in a Dedicated gluten free facility... This is analogous to people with peanut allergies who need to check for "processed in a facility which processes nuts." Then there is the less stringent "Wheat Free" label , where the convention is "no wheat products added" -- the analogy being a Hershey Chocolate bar (w/o Almonds) which is 'nut free' even tho' it may carry a 'nut processing equipment' warning.

Some standard wheat bakeries, for example, will wipe down the equipment, and bake some "Wheat-Free" bread .. . but that doesn't make it "Gluten Free." Likely there are a few ppm too many for Celiacs or gluten intolerant (which there are different levels of intolerance.)

Why not eat "real fruit", unmolested and unprocessed?

Bingo.

Thank you for posting this. You got me curious about the ingredients in Smuckers Strawberry Jam, and on the label it says:

Strawberries, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, sugar.

What the heck? Nobody uses corn syrup when they make home-made jam, and home-made jams are the best! No more Smuckers for me. I need to find a new jam, a jam without corn syrup.

Why does dish soap say "made with real lemons" but lemon juice says made with artificial lemon flavor?

techweenie 08-02-2012 11:58 AM

There's an entire Seinfeld episode in this thread. And other ingredients as well.

I thought this was going to be another synchonized swimming thread.

They also make a suger-free (and corn syrup free) strawberry jam which is quite good.
