Bad day today or "How I spent Memorial Day in the hospital"...

Everything was going well this weekend and I was starting up the gas grill for my wife and something failed (regulator?) and a fireball came off the propane tank and burned my lower leg and singed the rest of me. I immediately put my leg in the pool and determined that I didn't have 3rd degree burn but a very substantial partial thickness (2nd degree) burn. So I wrapped a wet towel around my leg (my sandal melted to my foot) and Beth took me to the ER. 8mg of morphine did nothing, but the Dilaudid worked. This burn really hurt!!!

Anyway, They debrided it, applied Silvadene and gave me meds and I need to see a burn specialist in Detroit as soon as I can get an appt. I'll be staying home tomorrow as the pain meds are making me loopy and nauseated. The pain is manageable and I'm going to make sure it doesn't get infected. If it gets infected, a skin graft may be required and I'll do everything I can to avoid that! This is the worst burn I've had but I'm very fortunate my reflexes are as good as they are and my face, eyes, etc... didn't get burned. My lower leg from my foot to the knee is looking pretty nasty but not a 3rd degree burn, which is great!

Be careful with the gas grills, folks!!

Holy crap! So sorry to hear this. At least you've got some tall drugs at your disposal.
Is "debrided" what I think it is - as in using a hog scraper to get rid of the burned stuff?

Holy cow Art! Burns do hurt a lot. I hope you have a full recovery. Was it a new bottle?

Jeez Art, seems like already keep enough balls in the air with out adding anything to the mix.

Good luck with the leg, if they are going to hose you with the pricey dressing stuff, I may be able to hook you up.

Jeezus! I hope you heal up fast. Are pain meds an option? Glad no one else was hurt.

Yikes! Better lower leg than upper leg! Sounds like it could have been a lot worse. I'm sure it's not your main focus right now, but it will be interesting to see exactly what failed.

We care about you, Art.

Burns SUCK.

Beer works pretty good or, if you don't have the right kind of beer, then whisky can be substituted.

That sounds awful - I moved my old BBQ out of storage last weekend and put it out on my paved backyard area. I remember looking at the regulator, wondering if I should use it to replace it (hasn't been used in years). I'll be extra careful now.

Get well soon, Art.
