Racing Sponsorship

Watching Mid Ohio right now. Just wondering, when a car is sponsored by the National Guard. does the National Guard pay for that?

Yes. Well, taxpayers do. The Army is coming under fire for sponsoring Tony Shumacher and some Nascar team.

It is approved by Congress to be budgeted just like billboard or print advertising to promote enrollment.

Why is this a problem? They want young men and women to enlist. Years ago, they used to mail out literature to every male high school Senior. Money spent to get people interested. Now they run TV ads during major sports events and sponsor auto racing.

There was a survey done recently of service people and they checked into how many people joined based on the NASCAR team. I think it was like 7 resulting in about $5m spent per recruit. Not sensible marketing.

Chris, the indirect effect of marketing is seldom well understood. If someone were to survey you to determine the reason that you joined, would the first thing out of your mouth be, "Because Dale Jr. told me to!"?

The armed forces are going to spend money on recruitment. The fact that they can provide entertainment in the process is a plus to me. In fact, I'd like to see an Army/Navy rivalry in motorsports.

Advertising's effectiveness can't always be measured in concrete ways. There is a reason why companies spend millions to put their product in front of you. Seeing the product will affect your purchase patterns even when you don't consciously chose to buy it because of a billboard or racing sponsorship.

At the risk of being banished to parf,

I'd rather see tax dollars spent on racing than on endless wars halfway across the world.

Having a son in the guard, I'd like to see that money going to increase their salaries. And secure better health care for them. I do love racing but don't like my tax dollar paying for it.

When Army sponsored the MB2 car we were told the money came from their advertising budget and was less than 5% of it.

Oh I get that...

...but I don't understand why they sponsor NASCAR? How is that even remotely related? It's like a yarn company sponsoring a turkey hunt...
