Question Speaking of golf clubs - going for walks with a single club?

Sid's club thread reminded me that I wanted to ask this question on an observation:

I have seen this in SoCal - never in NorCal. Folks going for a neighborhood walk with a golf club in their hand. Often holding on to the business end of it.

What is this good for? The clubs apparently are too short to be a walking cane. None of these people seems to have golf balls on them going to put in the park etc.

Is this for protection or just being weird? Why is this a SoCal phenomenon (I have almost a decade under my belt in the Bay Area and never seen such a thing there).

Great for chipping a dog turd off of the footpath.

There's a very skinny fella that walks across the street and down the Ave. between 6:49PM-7:04 everyday! He is dedicated. He has a Golf club in his hand as well. A wedge, I think.

Ever been attacked by a dog when out for a walk? I have... wish I had a golf club at the time.

I have a walking stick now.

Not if you tend to hold on to the business end of it!

I never walk or run without at least one dog. Then we get attacked, the attacking dog always goes for the dog, giving me plenty of time to quickly kick the air out of it.

I did not think about dogs. Ican see the fear of dog attack when walking the neighborhoods. I think it is unlikely, but some people are not taking chances.

Still wondering why SoCal has this behavior and not NorCal? Same type of neighborhoods in terms of socioeconomic level. Same weapons laws too!

That's funny, my ex-GF used to always walk her collies with a golf club, (one of the irons), in case her dogs got attacked by a loose dog. Collies are not very tough and a Rottweiler or a pitbull could really inflict some damage quickly. At least at night she carried one.

She never had to use it to my knowledge but she's a hell of a golfer and she would have really swung that thing.

pop yourself in the shin with the leading edge of a golf iron sometime...you'll get the picture quickly.
