One of the greats in the music biz. Won an Oscar, Emmy, Tony, Grammy and Pulitzer. RIP Marvin, thanks for the music.

I dig Carly Simon. Guilty.

Speaking of Nobody Does it Better, my mother has, for years, said that Shirley Bassey was the singer they used for the original Spy Who Loved me theme. She searched and searched for it.
And I also seem to remember that it was different than Carly's version, as well. But, that was a long time ago and the memory fades...
Recent versions of the film credit Carly, and the version I just DVR'ed has her version....

What's up with that? Did they change it at some point? Anyone got a very old VHS tape of it?

Bummer about Marvin.

Wolfe - these are the only songs I know of S.B. did for Bond movies: Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker.

I have the Bond soundtrack album.

Never heard a S.B. version of T.S.W.L.M.

HTH!

RIP Marvin

Couple years ago, saw him conduct the San Diego Pops, 4th of July, Concert by the Bay, two years in a row, one with Carly Simon. Incredibly gifted musician. He'll be greatly missed.

I flew him for years in the Warner Brothers' Gulfstream. He was once married to the CEO's wife, Carol Bayer Sager. They were still best friends, and she collaborated with him on many titles.

We had opinions, as pilots, on all the 'people' we flew, and he was in the top tier. A genuine pleasure.

RIP, the music world is a little quieter tonight.

Honors and awards

Hamlisch was one of only eleven people to win all four major US performing awards: Emmy Award, Grammy Award, the Oscar and Tony Award.[14] This collection of all four is referred to as an "EGOT". Hamlisch and Richard Rodgers are the only two people to have won this series of awards and a Pulitzer Prize.[14][15]

He received ten Golden Globe Award nominations, winning twice for Best Original Song, with Life Is What You Make It in 1972 and The Way We Were in 1974.[16]

He received six Emmy Award nominations, winning four times, twice for music direction of Barbra Streisand specials, in 1995 and 2001.[17]

He shared the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1976 with Michael Bennett, James Kirkwood, Nicholas Dante, and Edward Kleban for his musical contribution to the original Broadway production of A Chorus Line.

Hamlisch received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Soundtrack Awards, in Ghent, Belgium, in 2009. The World Soundtrack Awards are held annually at the end of the Ghent Film Festival, which honors Belgian and international films, with a focus on film music.

He was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2008.[18]

In 2008, he appeared as a judge in the Canadian reality series "Triple Sensation" which aired on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). The show was aimed to provide a training bursary to a talented youth who could be a leader in song, dance, and acting.

He was only 68.....what amazing accomplishments he achieved...not the least of which was being such a good human being.

I listened to an older (2010 I think) interview of him on our local public radio station. He seemed like a true gentleman and obviously very talented. Applied and auditioned for Juliard at 6 1/2. He didn't know any traditional classical music. But played a popular song at the time in several keys by ear. Couldn't read music. He was accepted and was writing his own stuff as a teenager.

Wolfe we went over this already. Shirley Bassey never sang the song for the movie. She did put out an album of bond songs, in which she sang the different Bond theme songs.

overrated..
never gave credit to Scott Joplin for any of the music in 'The Sting', when in fact, the entire movie score was Scott Joplin music - nor Marvin Hamlisch music.
...however.... 68 is way too young....

Hi Bill,

Really?

As a data point...I have never in my life ever heard Marvin Hamlisch's name associated with the score for "The Sting".

It's always been Scott Joplin. Always.

Respectfully,
Baz

1973 Winner, Best Original Song - "The Way We Were" from The Way We Were

The music for The Sting was a collection of adaptations of Joplin's songs (played/orchestrated by Hamlisch) along with two songs Hamlisch wrote. I don't recall Hamlisch ever taking credit for the songs, but radio stations would list it as being Hamlisch since he performed it.

Hi Todd,

Thanks for the clarification. I can see why there might be some misunderstanding.

The early 70's -- those were some good times.....

All the best,
Baz
