Tying knots......

Over the years I have made a hobby of tying decorative and useful knots.

My all time favorite is the Monkey Fist. First used as a weighted end for heaving lines, can be used as a weapon on a short lead and at one time was used in mountain climbing.

My next favorite due to my heritage is the Celtic knot.

Anyone else into this esoteric hobby? I've tried to teach my kids.....but they seem to have no interest.

I like knots. I learned a bunch when I was younger in the Boy Scouts. I've been thinking with them a bit lately. I was surfing some knot web sites two nights agoand even downloaded a knot app to my phone.

The Ashley Book of Knots is the schizzle. The Ashley Book of Knots - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

First printing in 1944.

Those are so cool! You like the Turk's head? Have always admired decorative knots but never learned to tie any.

When I was a kid in grade school/Cub Scouts, I learned a number of useful knots, e.g., bowline on a bight, sheepshank and a few others.

I remember getting reprimanded, several times, by teachers for teaching my little classmate buddies how to tie a hangman's noose. :D

The app that I downloaded covered some knot history and references the Ashley book often.

Very cool! I paid someone to tie up some lanyards with monkeyfists to use on subsea equipment. Yours are way better.

Would you be interested in tying some from polypropylene rope? We'll need some again, I'm sure.

This is a good website for knots.....
Animated Knots by Grog | How to Tie Knots | Fishing, Boating, Climbing, Scouting, Search and Rescue, Household, Decorative, Rope Care,
I am always looking for new improved knots for fishing, securing loads, etc.

I watched a couple of videos on how to tie those last week. They don't look hard, but then I haven't actually tied one either.

I'm always open to do something creative and useful. Those pics are of decorative nature and not what I would consider useful in real life use.

Key chains that can used to whap the starter solenoid or the neighbor kid.

Got my oldest daughter to make me a sling out of a solomon bar ...

She's made a couple more and has them on consignment in a buddy's gunshop, and has taken and completed a few custom orders for dog leashes.

I learned how to tie a monkeys fist when I was around 10 years old...grew up around boats and on the water...

Splicing, knots, rope handling are all handy to know...Grogs site is pretty cool...

Snotty knots?

mikeesik 08-07-2012 05:11 PM

I'd be so proud to know how to do that.

The only intricate knot I tied failed.

masraum 08-07-2012 05:12 PM

I like the Carrick knot and the diamond knot which is built upon the Carrick knot.

widgeon13 08-07-2012 05:30 PM

I can barely tie my shoes!

mudman 08-07-2012 05:30 PM

I work in a field where a poor knot could result in serious injury or death.

I like knots a lot!

Most commonly used knot for me while working is the bowline. Simple and quick to tie but very effective.

Perhaps the most under appreciated knot is the one developed by Sir Samuel Knowit.

Knowit's Knot.
