Most of the Trans Canada highway is a 90kph zone and it takes the better part of three days to drive from the Manitoba border to Quebec. Brutal. Arriving from the west, you're dumped from a 110kph zone in Manitoba onto the 90kph "highway" in Ontario only to be greeted by OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) cruisers as far as the eye can see. A sad turn of affairs after driving most of the way from BC without seeing one single speed trap... yup, it's all about safety in Onterrible! |

120 is 40 over, get your car towed. |
I am sure speeds reached much beyond that at some points on the drive. We have been on a couple of those drives, on the last on we did (a couple of years ago) at the trun around point we stayed behind and enjoyed our safe drive home alone.....
The comments on the link certainly show some ignorance, but then the comments on the PCA CWR site weren't reflecting much better from the other side of the fence, and were not helping matters for sure. Seems two different threads have been taken down from the PCA CWR site already..... |
The repsonses weren't exactly consistent with the message the club would like to portray..... :)

It's understandable that the club should try to be a responsible advocate of cars and driving. That being said, what is the purpose of a sports car club that doesn't at least put forward a position that the technology of the modern car should allow speed limits to to be increased? Many of the limits appear to have been created to"harvest" from the slightly enthusiastic motorist (ie. no safety motive at all). Even some of the thread contributors (all Porsche owners) have no problem maintaining the status quo. Don't get me wrong, this is not earth shattering stuff but I would say in BC the powers that be have decided that this potential source of revenue has been woefully under-performing and there is an seems to be an unlimited capacity for the public to accept these laws that "enhance safety". If these penalties had their supposedly desired effect (slowing everyone down to the speed limit or less), what would the Guv do to replace this revenue stream, lower limits in the interest of even more safety...or the lessening the impact on the environment? Cheers

A sports car club should offer track and AX events so the runs on public roads are left for wine and cheese people. JMHO. Like JB I don't like to go on group runs - it is tough to stay off the loud pedal when everyone drives a sports car.

The problem with the idea of raised speed limits is that a 16 year old kid in a clapped out beater can drive them too......
100kph is likely a little too low for our main highways, and the Sea to Sky (in places) could likely be raised. But if the speed limit was 110 or 120 what difference would it make? I am all for a MODEST increase of our highway limits, but I have seen enough idiotic driving every day at legal speeds to not want anything beyond a MODEST increase. And I really don't think that the GOV see speeding tickets as a revenue stream. I would wager it likely does not even cover the cost to patrol the highway system. Yes, they set up in obvious places to catch people, and there are some questionable speed reduction areas but still... I loved the one poster on the deleted PCA CWR thread that thought the club had a deal with the police. Along the lines of we won't race each other so they will turn the other cheek to the speeds. He suggested the club sits down with the Police and renegotiates the "deal". Wonder why the general public thinks a few of us Porsche owners are A-holes....... The other point is this. Everyone who had their car towed was well aware of the speed limit. They also were likely aware of the fines associated with those speeds (if they watch the news or read a paper). If one choses to not follow them, then one can't really complain if given a citation can they? The reason we never completed our run with this group is on the way up I had a line of cars behind me. The car behind me, someone I had never met, was right on my bumper at , lets just say above the speed limit, coming over a rise. I then slowed to the limit to allow a minivan to merge ahead of us when their lane ended. This caused honking and fist waving from a couple of the cars behind us. I don't mind a car right on my bumper on the track at a DE when I know who it is. I also realize that everyone who wants a raised limit, including porsche owners and 16 year old punks, are excellent safe drivers who are always driving with their eyes up and looking far down the road for possible danger. They are also highly skilled in car control so that in the event the unthinkable happens and an unforseen danger suddenly appears, they have nothing to worry about. Yes, I am kidding. :) |
Well Jeff we can agree to disagree both in the speeds and the governments motives to crack down on the miscreants that have the audacity to exceed the speed limit...(money or safety) Cheers.
|
Agreed, and I am happy with that.
But one needs to remember that the laws and limits are written for the lowest common denomenator, not for the average or above average person. When it comes to motor vehicle laws and liability and litigation the state needs to think about how "bellow average Joe" will cope with the limits. Having said all of that, if one is a good driver with a good car and of reasonable intelligence (which I assume most if not all on here are) they can find places to exercise their desires without any worry of the law. A weekly highly spirited group drive on the sea to sky highway may not be the best place to do that... :) |
Around here, we can go 75mph on the major highways. That's what, around 130 clicks for you guys? Few people die at those speeds. Those that do usually do so because they fall asleep at the wheel. Most wrecks occur on the slower roads. I'd say 90+% of those are caused by someone not paying attention. Wrecks do happen for other reasons but it's not usually a loss of control, unless the driver was doing something stupid. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but the idiots will be idiots, whether they are going 30mph or 100.
It's not the speed. Any moron can handle that, if they have a little common sense and pay attention. Remember, if the road conditions aren't perfect, you can slow down. They teach that in school. Low speed limits are an unecessary burden for most people. JR |
75mph is 120 kph.

Java, in Canada 80 mph would "get you noticed" anywhere, the highest limit currently on selected routes is 110kph which is very close to 68 mph. Much more common is 90-100 kph (55-62 mph). In Italy the max on the Autostrades is 130kph (80mph) but no one seems to notice at most any speed. When you're on the Autostrade doing approx the legal limit, you had better be in the slow lane because a big Bimmer, Audi, Jag or Merc will fill your rear view in very short order. It's interesting seeing those cars in their "natural element".....kind of makes you wonder why we buy them in Canada. Cheers

Driving 80 on the hiways around SoCal will get the attention of a CHP patrol car. This was while I was in the slow lane of traffic...
One did to me... pulled up beside me while I was going 5 mph over the limit and getting passed by every other car on the road. He switched on the bull horn and said "drive it, or park it, but get it out of the way of the traffic" then pulled away with the flow of the traffic and took off... Different worlds out there... |
Didya have yer blinker on too?;)
