Need scary camping story

Hello,

I am going camping with my 10 yr old son and some similar dads / sons next weekend. I would love to have one great camp story. I am certain that there are many here in PPOT.

Anyone have a favorite?

Thanks,
Larry

Varmint. I live in Oregon. Banjos are a given! We are a suburb of appalachia.

Are you pretty good at improvising and "lying"?

When I was about 10, at summer camp, the college-age counselor in our cabin of about 12 guys told us about some "swamp women" who had been seen in the area for decades, and had actually attacked and killed several men who were construction workers camping in tents during the time the camp was being built.

Inbred, long, scraggly green hair, teeth missing, long fingernails, barely clothed, stinky, and smelly... the works.

He even said one had been seen a coupla weeks before our week at camp... it was up near the back of one of the cabins on our side of the camp, the closest to the lake where we swam every day... which of course, had a swamp at its headwaters a mile or two away. I don't remember whether he said how many of them supposedly existed.

This was told with a straight face as a true story and had most of us scared to death because we had to leave the crank windows open (there were screens) for ventilation. Of course, a few minutes after he told the story, this guy reached over to the screen beside his bunk and scratched it with his fingernails.

And everybody screamed. And he laughed and apologized, but... I don't remember if any guys challenged him on it, but if they did, he never backed down on its being true.

You need to tell the other dads about it if you're gonna do it so they can all be in on it, saying they remember reading about it in the paper.

10 is the perfect age for this sort of thing.

This guy told the story at night after "lights out." Nobody ever went to the bathroom after that. My buddy Tom was on a top bunk and had an 8 ft. bullwhip he had gotten from some souvenir shop up in the Smokies. He had that thing draped over a rafter right by his head every night.

A ghost story.... as you're sitting around the campfire.... the only sound is the crackling of the campfire and your voice, speaking softly and quietly...

"This is a real story about a ghost I saw".... tell them where it was (an old house or an old business in town, about 100 years old).... describe the ghost (a woman about 30 years old, wearing clothes from about 100 years ago).... she was moving down the hallway, floating about a foot off the ground, slowly moving toward me... she was reading a book... she looked up and saw me, and she stopped... she looked me in the eye, like she was sizing me up, and then she smiled a really strange smile like the Mona Lisa smile, and then she floated down a side hallway.... I wanted to see where she went, but I was afraid to move.... I waited a few seconds and then I walked over to the side hallway.... (your voice gets very soft and quiet now)... and I looked around the corner, and...

ARGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!! (sudden really loud scream, with a wild-eyed look)

Guaranteed to scare the crap out of everyone.

By the way, this is a true ghost story, happened to me.

Then he saw it. A bloody hook hung from the handle of the passenger-side door.

And they were never seen again.
It was never caught, and believed to still wander the woods.
The only way to tell if it's around is when the insects get quiet.

Well... I went camping with an ex-girlfriend once and ... Oh, you meant scary for the kids. Sorry, I misunderstood the question.
